Baby Names

thoughts on Mina?

We have been struggling to find a name we both like for DD2.  the only name my DH has brought to the table is Mina.... he really doesn't like any of my top choices (Caroline, Madeline, Charlotte, Evelyn, Marion, Cecilia, Keira, Cassandra etc.)  so what are your thoughts on Mina?  I feel like it's really short, and sounds like a nickname... but since it's the only one he seems to like I'm trying to give it a chance.

Re: thoughts on Mina?

  • NMS I love Charlotte.
No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you are the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.

  • Sounds like a nickname...
  • Not bad, but sounds incomplete or like a NN.
  • My SIL's name is Meena (she's indian) - I assume this is similar to how Mina is pronounced. I think it's pretty and feminime.

  • ok sounds like you gals are validating how i feel...

i don't particularly like wilhelmina, as we don't have any family ties with the name, but mina on it's own just sounds incomplete/nn to me.

sigh.  anyone have any similar names or names we can use the nn mina i can bring back to DH? I hate to veto the only name he likes, but i just can't get on board...

  • My great grandmother's name was Mina (not short for anything) and she went by Minnie.  I don't think it is too short (but this is coming from someone planning on naming her daughter Etta).

Your classic options for longer names aren't pretty:  Guillermina, Maximina, Minerva, Wilhelmina.  I wonder if there is a name with the "min" or "mean" sound that you could go with: Jasmin, Yasmine, Clemintine, Carmin, Carmina,

  • I like it.

Some of my friends call me Mina....my name is Jacomina (it's dutch).

     I also like Mila :)

  • I like it.  If you're not a big fan, what about Nina?  I always thought that was a nice, underused name.

Carmina is nice!  My great grandmothers name was Benjamina... but its a Spanish name.

  • There's a little girl in my daughter's daycare class named Mina. She's a beautiful girl and I think her name fits her perfectly. Because of her, I really like the name.

  • Could Mina be a NN for Marion?

ETA: I really like PP's suggestion of Carmina! :)

  • I know a teenager named Minna, so I don't have a problem with it as a given name. I do prefer the double-l spelling, tho. I think it might be more common in Germany, where Minna's mother is from.

  • This is one of my favorite names. We are Swedish and German, so it is a pretty traditional name. Definitely on my list of girls, and DH says he likes it too.
