Yesterday I went in for my growth scan at 36w2d. My OB said the baby is approx 7lb12oz and that it could be close to 10lbs if I make it to 40w, but I know these can be +/- 2 lbs. I am 5'1", but I know this has nothing to do with ability to birth a child of any size. She referred me to the ultrasound clinic where they can get a more accurate size reading because the one yesterday was on her less fancy u/s machine. I am of the mindset that I can deliver any size baby, but she started freaking me out talking about possibility of extensive tearing and shoulder/collar bone issues during delivery. She mentioned the option of starting to strip membranes and do Cervidil at 38 weeks. I am not on board with this idea as I want things to move along naturally and I am terrified that this could lead to c-section if they do the induction and I don't progress because my body wasn't ready.
My main goal is to avoid c-section. Other than laboring at home as long as possible to avoid hospital intervention, is there anything I can do to help stick to my plan?
Re: Big baby & OB talking induction...grrrr
Was there a reason for your growth scan in the first place? OBs use them for exactly this purpose - stand your ground and refuse the second ultrasound. Your faith in your body to birth the baby it grew isn't ridiculous, your OBs desires to jump in and plan unnecessary interventions a month early is.
Stay away from growth scans and keep your positive attitude about being able to deliver your baby naturally! Good luck

Just from personal expereince....
I had a growth scan with my son at 36 weeks and they told me he already measured at 7 1/2 lbs...... so big baby right?
He was born at 39 weeks and weighed only 6lbs 11oz!
I am also small framed (5'2 and under 100lbs pre pregnancy). My daughter DC#2 weighed 8lbs 3 oz and I had a way easier birth with her even being 1 1/2 lbs bigger. Our bodies do amazing things and it sounds like you are right on track with not letting this growth scan dictate your decision to go intervention free unless it is truly necessary
Ugh, I hate reading these posts. It's a perfect example about everything I hate about the current medical model of care undermining a woman's ability to birth her child.
I'm sorry that they gave you cause to worry. I agree with PP I wouldn't even go for the further U/S. I don't think they're a helpful tool at all and they only seem to have a negative impact whether it be outright (induction, C/S) or a little more subtle (affecting you and your care provider's mindset about the birth).
It sounds like you know this already, but even if your baby IS 10lbs that doesn't mean you can't safely vaginally birth that baby. Barring medical complications your body is going to grow the baby that's right for you.
GL!
ETA: I just saw in your siggy that you're being monitored for GD. At this point do they think the GD is still a concern?

Hi there. I'm probably no help but I want to say i know how you feel! I am 4ft 11 and was 90 lbs pre pregnancy. At 37 weeks I was sent for a growth scan, I was skeptical because of everything pp have said and sure enough I was told my baby was big 80th percentile and OB made it sound like it would be more difficult for me to deliver. He also did mention he has seen scan be off up to 3lbs and though he is a fan of induction he respects my wishes (at least so far) and hasn't pushed for induction or csection. He said we will wait and see. I agree with you. You don't know what your body can't do. I have faith that God has made a baby I am able to birth and though I have freaked out about a big baby I also know that I need to have faith my body was made for this and it knows what to do.
Good luck! By the was there was a natural birth story recently posted on this board about a lady who gave birth to a 10lb baby! The scan had estimated her baby to be 8lbs! Everyone was shocked. I'll see if I can find it. That story really inspired me

Don't be afraid of the big baby issue. I was a big baby (9lbs 10oz) born to a mother under 5 feet, my son was born two weeks early and weighed in at 8lbs 13oz and the birth was just fine.
Some babies are a little meatier than others, they almost always fit. My midwife likes to say that most of the time it's baby fat and will squish around where it needs to. It's unlikely that the frame of the baby compared to your frame will cause exit issues. Like others have said, if it does you can explore other pushing positions until the pieces fit.
If you're really concerned and would like to avoid hospital induction, try some of the natural methods once you're full term. Most of them will not cause labor to come on unless your body is truly ready for it and in that case, they just help get things going a little sooner. I did evening primrose oil and all the walking, squatting, ball bouncing I could stand. It won't hurt and it won't cause your baby to arrive sooner than it should.
