Bradley Method

Interested in hearing from any experienced moms who took classes on the Bradley Method or used the method during their deliveries. Also interested in hearing from any first time moms who are considering it.

I have no idea whether or not I want a natural birth but from what I've read of the Bradley Method, it seems like it teaches some great techniques regardless of what route you take.

Basically, I'm a clueless, first time pregnant woman taking the see what sticks approach.

  • If you are clueless then I HIGHLY recommend taking the class.  It teaches you everything you want to know (and probably some you don't) so that you're uber prepared for any type of situation and that your H knows what questions to ask and how to make decisions.  It forms a great partnership between you and your H too, because you're in it together, actively engaged.  I (not bragging here, just honest) knew probably 60% more about what to expect and how to deal with interventions, etc. and how to be prepared than 100% of my friends who did not take it.

  • I never took the classes. I bought the book natural childbirth the Bradley way. Highly recommend it and easy to follow. I had a natural med free birth that I wanted and am doing that with a water birth this time. If you have any questions feel free to PM and my birth story is in my blog link.

I just did a lot of rocking/swaying on the birthing ball and "slow danced" with my husband to get baby to lower.

  • I've just signed up for a Bradley Method Birth Class myself.  I think I want a natural birth but am not 100% sure yet.  I, like you thought it couldn't hurt to be prepared with some good techniques I'm hoping to pick up from the class.

  • I didn't take a class, but read 2 different books on Bradley method. It was great to read both of them because they pretty much talked about the same thing, but reading it twice really helped get it into my head.  I was able to have a successful natural med free intervention free birth.  The thing I liked the most about the experience was after the birth was over.  I felt incredible!  I wasn't hooked up to any IV's or spinals or anything so I was able to get up and walk around an hour later.  I didn't sleep much the night before because of labor, but was on such a high after the birth that I was awake all day to enjoy that first day with my daughter.  I fear that adding meds to my birth experience would take away that feeling and leave me in a fog after the birth.  I'm hoping to do it the same way this time.  I'm not going to lie.....it hurt like a b! but the end result was so worth it that if you can stay focussed on that part and know that in the scheme of things, the actual painful birth part is really small it helps to get you through it.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE tha Bradley Method! I took the classes when i was pregnant with ds.I was able to get through 22 hours of labor completely unmedicated. It was exactly what i wanted.

i cannot say enough positive things about it. It really worked for me. It really helped dh as well. he learned that everything that was happening was completely normal. he also got to see the benefits of an unmedicated birth and was truly my advocate. we had the room to ourselves. nurses only came in periodically for externally monitoring. Most of the time i was free to walk around and to get into any position that made me feel comfortable.

  • I love the Bradley method too. I read the two books that are out and worked with my husband on the techniques and loved it. It really did work for me, I managed two pain med free births with this method and plan to use it with my third.

  • I am planning for a med-free birth with a midwife at a birth center, and they offer the Bradley class. I plan on taking it this time (I did Hypnobirthing last time). I'm really excited about it!

  • Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I've been in touch with a local Bradley Method instructor and am strongly considering taking her class. Even if I do end up getting an epidural, I feel like this class can only help both me and my husband.

  • I read his book "Husband Coached Labor" or whatever it was called and thought it was very heavily propagandized.  There was some helpful information I thought and a lot of it was interesting, but it was certainly very one-sided.  There was also some side-eye worth advice, like women should forego menswear, wearing long skirts and no underwear.  cheers!
