Natural Birth

Battling with my insurance... words of advice?

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and I am currently "battling" with them about covering birth at a birthcenter.

At this point they are telling me if I go this route I will need to meet my $7500 deductible before they will cover anything. If I deliver at a hospital it will be a total of $200!

There argument so far has been that my policy states that my birth will be covered in a in patient hospital facility and a birth center does not qualify.

Any pointers from others who have gone through the same thing?

  • Do they cover a homebirth?  With our first, our insurance company covered a homebirth but not birth center (which wasn't a big deal- our midwife does it at home or at her birth center).  Now (2 babies later) they cover both birth center and homebirth.  However, I do know that my midwife lists Blue Cross Blue Shield as an insurance company that covers her services (but I'm in Ohio).  It may be something to think about.  My midwife is a CNM and what she brings to your house is the same equipment she has at the birth center.

  • I have BCBS and I lucked out with the best of both worlds:  a birth center IN a hospital.  My copay was $200.

I'm not telling you that you have to switch, but if there is a birth center inside a hospital near you, that might be a good option.

    Best of luck!

  • We also have BCBS and home birth or birthing centers not in a hospital are not covered.  We also would have 100% coverage minus a few small payments (maybe $150 I think?) in a hospital with no coverage if not.

    It sucks.

  • That sucks.   I have BCBS and they are covering my birth at a birth center.
