Mealtime battle

My son is 14 months old as of yesterday. Last week he started freaking out whenever we (it's just the two of us; my husband is deployed) eat because he wants my food instead of his (even if it's the same thing on the same type of plate...).

He goes to daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays while I'm in class. He didn't have any issues last Tuesday and was out with a fever last Thursday. Well, today he stole another kid's lunch; they sit at little tables in little chairs and he reached over and grabbed the other toddler's lunch.

Of course, dinner was a battle again too. He ends up screaming and crying hysterically through every meal and I really have no idea what to do.

Re: Mealtime battle

  • Can you put more on your plate and share it with him when he asks? If you can defuse the situation by doing what he wants right away, then he might lose interest in doing it.

  • Loading the player...
  • That has not worked. He wants the entire plate and he stole another kid's lunch. Just looking for a gentle way to approach this bc I'm surely not the only one going through this.

  • Have you tried giving him the plate, and then having your real one on reserve? Does he feed himself independently? Does he have a plate, fork, spoon, etc?

This woman has good info about eating, though I don't know if her website has specifics with your problems: https://www.ellynsatter.com/to-15-months-feeding-your-almost-toddler-i-30.html

  • Sometimes DD and I just eat from the same plate.  I give myself bites, I give her bites, she gives herself bites, she gives me bites...  It's all just for fun. :)
