Nurseries and Baby Gear

What's the best item for keeping baby in our room?

My nursery is upstairs and my bedroom is on the main floor.  I plan to keep baby in my room for the first few months so I'm not running up and down the stairs every two hours.  What's the most conveinent and safest for keeping him/her in our room at night? Moses basket/ pack n play/co-sleeper/ bassinet?

  • We just used a bassinet. I think they are all "safe" if used properly...so whatever you are comfortable with :)

  • I love having the pack'n play in our room. We got a "deluxe" model and have gotten a ton of use out of it. I'm glad that I chose this item as I have already used it for travel and know that I will get the most use out of this item compared to a bassinet.

  • We started with a bassinet but changed to a rock n play quickly. Dd had bad reflux.

  • Oh and you didn't ask but our video monitor has been priceless since moving dd upstairs. I can't say how many trips upstairs it has saved us!

Honestly as a 4X mom - get a play pen or a PNP.  a bassinet they outgrow so fast sometimes by month one, depending on baby's size.  A play pen at least you can use later for travel or going out to In-laws or friend's or what not,  we use a Play pen for DD to sleep and our house is so small.  she sleeps in our room.

  • I would start with a pnp because you will get future use out of it for traveling or containing your mobile baby when you shower/leave the room.

If your baby has trouble sleeping in it, then consider the rnp. I bought the rnp before ds was born based on all the hype and I don't like it. It caused way to much chin to chest and ds had loud breathing when in it.
