Mercy vs DePaul

I am trying to pick between Mercy and DePaul and I am having a hard time. I just moved up here so I have no idea what one is better. Has anyone been to either? What are your thoughts?

Re: Mercy vs DePaul

  • Mercy is definitely known around here as THE place to have a baby. Some people don't like it because of that, feeling like it's a baby factory. Others take comfort in knowing that they are equipped to handle just about anything that could possibly happen with a birth/newborn.

Re: DePaul, I haven't even heard of anyone that's delivered there in recent years, so I can't really say. Not to say it's not a fine hospital to deliver at. I just don't have any anecdotes about it one way or the other.

A lot of it is probably going to come down to what your preferences are. We live in South City, and my doc is at St. Anthony's, with privileges at Mercy. I could choose to deliver at either, but chose St. A's because of its location and because I liked the idea of it being a little bit smaller/personalized. I would suspect that DePaul might be similar in that regard, but like I said, can't really relay any stories one way or the other.

  • I don't know anything about DePaul, unfortunately.

I am choosing to deliver at Mercy because of what Rabstbmom said above about them being equipped to handle anything and also because it is in a pretty central location/close to home.

If you're unsure, see if you can take a tour of both- perhaps you'll feel like you can make a better decision once you've seen both hospitals and had some questions answered.

  • Also have no anecdotes for DePaul, but I had a FANTASTIC experience with Mercy.  "Everyone" goes to the "baby factory" for a reason!  They are the best.  Our nurses were fantastic - one even staying a little after her shift was over to see us through delivery.

I found great comfort in their technology should anything happen to the baby.  On our tour, we were told that there are very few problems that would require your baby to be sent somewhere else, and those problems are usually so big that they're known before it's time to give birth.

  • I  would not deliver at DePaul. The hospital does not have a good reputation. Are those your only 2 choices? I really like Missouri Baptist. It is next door to Mercy. also they have Wash U doctors.

My doctor delivers at Mercy and MoBap. I choose Mobap after touring because Mercy seemed to big for me.

  • I am probably bias because I work for Mercy, but I also feel it is an amazing hospital. I think you will be very pleased with your whole experience at Mercy.
