I ask the parent what the child likes or wants when I RSVP. I usually spend less than $20, that typically gets several small toys or one more elaborate toy.
I've tried keeping a small stash of age-appropriate boy and girl toys, but I do like to buy what the specific kid wants if I can, so I'm going back to just buying as needed.
Fun or unusual art supplies always seem to be a good gift for either gender and most ages.
I shop sales for these kinds of gifts, keeping a small stockpile in a closet, and generally spend less than $10. I prefer to get something generic like blank books & markers, craft kits, etc., since I don't know what they have or like.

I spend between $10-$20 with an average being at around $15. If my DD is good friends with the child, I will spend a little more and if it is a random kid from class that my DD never talks about, etc, I will spend a little less. It adds up (between my 2 DD's, we had 3 parties this weekend). As far as what we buy, I let me kids choose and you can always email the parents and ask for suggestions. Right now, a go to for the girls is a Barbie and some books.
Re: Kid parties... gifts?
I usually think around $15, unless its a good friend. Then a little more.
anything princess, fairy, pony, littlest pet shop, crafty... All would be good.
I stick close to $15 as well. I bought small LaLaLoopsie dolls at Target the other day.
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
