4 month check up and 12% weight =(

Just went for DS pedi visit and vaccinations and he is 13.8 lbs and in the 12% range. Pedi doesn't seem to be worried about it though because he's 85% in height so he's growing. DS has always been such a fussy eater...first at the breast and now with the bottle. I guess maybe I have a future picky eater on my hands??

FWIW, he was born 6lbs 8 oz and 19 in so he wasn't super big to start off with. How did everyone else's LO do at 4 months?

Re: 4 month check up and 12% weight =(

  • He was 15 lbs 6 oz 50th percentile and 26.5 in 90th percentile. His head has consistently been in the 25th percentile though. Our doc says that aslong as babies are growing consistently, she's not too concerned.!His stats have been about the same, percentile wise since birth, so I guess that's what counts!

  • My LO is also in the 12th percentile for weight, she was 12lbs 6 oz at her 4 month check up. She had gained about 2lbs from her 2 month appointment. The doctor was not concerned at all. My mom actually found my baby book and at my 4 month appointment I was 12lbs 12 oz and 24inches long (lo was also 24 inches long).  My lo eats about 28 oz of formula a day but she has reflux and she spits up A TON through out the day.

  • My LO had his 4 month appt. on Friday. He weighed 15lbs 2 oz (50%) and was 26in long (90%). Doc seemed very pleased with him overall. Personally, I thought he would be a little bigger, but if the doc isn't worried, then neither am I.

  • My DS was almost the same as yours. 13lb 6 oz I was told 20th and 80 for length. He was 6lb 6 Oz at birth. I'm not worried at all. Some people are just thin both DH and I are. That's how you get averages some are below and some are above.

  • Rocking the 7th pecentile in both height and weight. Dr said he wasn't worried and that he would rather see him small than large. DS was little at birth, too. 6lb7oz at birth, 12lb11 oz at 4 mo appt.

  • our doctor doesn't even bother with the percentiles.  they're useless.  they were made in the 1950s and based off formula fed babies.  and formula back then wasn't like the formula now.

so if your doctor isn't worried, then i wouldn't worry :)

  • K was 6lb6oz at birth and 12lb at 4 months. I'm not worried, my son was tiny too and he's just fine. And he is an awesome eater.

  • As long as he's not dropping drastically in percentiles, there's nothing to worry about. They're averages...someone's going to be bigger, someone's going to be smaller. Re the formula charts a pp mentioned...there are two charts these days, one based on formula and one from the WHO based on breast fed babies. You can always ask your pedi which chart they use.

At his 4 month checkup DS was 14lbs14oz, and 24.5 inches. He was 50th percentile for both on the WHO chart.

This- I thought as long as the baby has a good curve then great. Ive know a kid who was tiny, tiny and was 9lbs at birth. I think babies just do their own thing.

  • Just had DS2's visit today and he was smaller than yours. Weighed in at 12lb 11oz and 25in long. Weight at birth was 6lb 11oz and 20 in long.

If it's any comfort DS1 weighed 7lb 2oz at birth and by his 6 month check-up was just shy of 20lbs. He is now almost 7 and only weighs about 45lbs. Only gained about 15lbs after the first year.

  • Had DD's visit and she was 13 lbs 7 oz and 25.5 in long.  Its written on our take home sheet that this is 41% for weight and 85% for height.  I thought she'd be bigger honestly :P

And DS isn't that far behind at 17 pounds at his 4 month appt. I get comments that he's so big every where I go.. Funny thing is he was born at  7 pounds 5oz.

  • DS is tiny, but I'm not worried at all. He was 6lbs 13.5oz at birth and 12lbs 6.5oz at 4 months. That's about the 2nd percentile. Our doctor is happy with his growth.

I am only 5' 2", DH is 5'8" so neither of us are very tall and DH and DS are both very lean. DH was 8 before he hit 30lbs! I'm just assuming DS will take after DH.

  • My son is in the 3% for weight, and the 5% for height. He's definitely a tiny thing. As long as they follow the same growth curve its ok. =)

  • My guy was 7 lbs 14.6 oz at birth, and at his 4 month checkup was 13 lbs, 10.5 oz - putting him in the 24th percentile for weight. He was 24.25" long, and so in the 24th percentile for length, too. His doctor wasn't concerned; her only advice was to delay solids until he's six months so he continues to receive calorie dense breastmilk for as long as possible.
  • I have a lil chunker!!

We just got back from the doc.  She's 15.13 @4 months! She's 24 inches. She was born @ 7.2 and 20 inches.

  • DD was 11lbs 8 oz and 24 in at the check up. She was borb at 6 lb 3 oz and 19 in.

She is the 50% for height and around 10-15 % for weight.

The doc looked at the overall pattern, so he said she is fine.

  • I totally could have just made this up, but I thought there was a rule of thumb that as long as baby doubled her birth weight by 6 months everything was ok? Anywho, ditto what PP said, as long as Dr. isn't worried, I'd try to not worry.

DD was 15 lb 3 oz and 26 inches at her 4 month. She had only gained 1 lb from her 2 month to 3 month appt, then gained almost 3 lbs from her 3 month to 4 month.

  • I have a small boy, too. His 4 month isn't until next week, but I'm guessing he's somewhere around 13 lbs by now. He's been in the 10th to 25th percentile on everything, and our pediatrician hasn't been concerned at all. As some others mentioned, some babies are just smaller, and my DH and I are both small people. Everyone has to be somewhere on the percentile charts.
  • My DD was also born small at 5 lb 13 oz. At her 4 month check up she was 13lbs and 7 oz so very close to your LO.
