How many gifts from Santa?

How many gifts does Santa bring? We do two plus stocking. The remaining gifts are from DH and I.

  • At my DH's insistence, they're all fom Santa.

  • Generally 1 big gift and then a stocking. I think last year we also got some wooden toys on sale and decided it made more sense for those to be from Santa too. So that would have been 2-3 Santa gifts plus a stocking.

  • 1 gift is from mommy and daddy, which she opens on Xmas eve. Everything Xmas day is from Santa, probably 3 to 4 gifts. She gets gifts from both sets of grandparents and multiple aunts and uncles, more than we would like, so there's really no need for us to give her anything else. We're pretty adamant about not spoiling her and sticking to our budget.

  • We do a couple gifts from DH and I, 1 from sibling, and the rest are from Santa. We open our family gifts on Christmas Eve and Santa presents on Christmas morning.  So they get a nice pile in the morning :)

  • 1 gift plus stocking. They get 3-4 from DH and I and they pick a book for one another. Their birthday is a month from Christmas so we try to keep it down.

This year we are really cutting down on gifts and will probably do only 3 total for each person. I just feel that it is getting ridiculous, we are buying gift just for the sake of gifts if that makes sense and not because it is something useful that the person wanted or will actually use. Our nieces (they live with us and are 13 and 18) and my SDs (19 and 21) never even really know what they want so we are just looking to buy stuff so they have things to open which is just stupid IMO. The same goes for us, we really don't need anything. DD was pretty overwhelmed last year with all the gifts. In the past we had one big gift from Santa but I think we are scaling back on that as well (ie not an expensive gift). Christmas shouldn't be about gifts and for us it just seemed like it was time to really scale back.

If it were up to me I would just stop doing gifts altogether for most occasions. I think it is great if people need things or have specific things they really want but when your kids don't even have any specific wants (other than laptops, iPads and things they aren't allowed to have) they obviously don't  need anything. We pretty much do Target or ITunes gift card for their birthdays now.

  • I big gift from Santa and stockings. 2-3 Christmas day gifts from Mom & Dad, and one Christmas Eve gift from Mom & Dad.

  • I don't really have a set number, but we tend to make her really fun stuff from Santa and the more practical stuff is from us, w/ one or two fun things.

I'm trying to be better about Christmas this year and will probably get her some clothes (dresses) dress up stuff and a Tag Reader and some puzzles and dolls.

  • Not sure. We actually just started talking about it this week. This is the first year DD1 actually fully understands the whole Santa concept, so she's definitely getting gifts from him, but I'm not sure if ALL the gifts will be from Santa, or if it'll be a mix of gifts from Santa and gifts from us/family. I figure I still have a month and a half or so to figure it out.

  • At my house, Santa gives all the toys.  This was my dh's tradition, and I really had trouble with it in the past, but I've learned to roll with it.  I have some traditions that I've stuck to that he didn't like at first too.

Some books count as toys and are from Santa, but some books come from Mom and Dad, too. Clothes (boring!) come from Mom and Dad.  Awesome.  I buy all the toys, but then only get credit for giving clothes.  Ugh.

Each kid gets between 5 and 8 things from Santa, depending on the how major the stuff is.  The year Santa brought a Wii, for instance, they got the Wii and about 3 other things apiece.  Usually there's one "bigger" gift with an assortment of smaller stuff.
