  On my sister's recommendation, I got this crib pad: Sealy Crib Pad. It is a waterproof pad, so kind of like combining your flannel pad and a waterproof layer (which I'm guessing is what your sister means by a mattress protector).

  I have an enclosure mattress cover-protector plastic helps keep down on allergens and keeps grossness from getting to mattress.

  A mattress pad that I believe is water proof 

  then the sheet. 

  The problem with most if not all "waterproof" mattress pads is the top mattress portion is the only part that's waterproof not the sides. trust me you want coverage for sides. Our LO has puke mutliple times near the side rails of her crib only to have the spit up/vomit slide down the edge had we not had enclosed mattress cover it would have gotten on the mattress yuck!

  We have the mattress protector also bought waterproofs sheet savers to put under baby so your not washing and changing sheets all the time it's like a fabric square

  With DS we had a waterproof mattress pad (soft on top, plastic underneath where it touches the mattress (which was also covered in a vinyl material), then we put a largish multi-purpose pad, then the crib sheet. We did this because if LO had a blowout/spit-up/pee through the diaper incident, we generally only had to change LO and the sheet and then put a new multi-purpose pad down. Rarely did we have to change/remove the mattress pad, too.
  
  We also have an "ultimate crib sheet" that is waterproof and goes on top of the regular crib sheet (secures to sides of crib with elastic straps), which we only used about 2 times when LO was sick - it was super easy to pull that off and have a clean bed underneath. Honestly, the ultimate crib sheet was a waste of money, and we definitely could have done without.

  Our mattress came with a waterproof cover covers all sides. I'm concerned it would be difficult to change and I don't want it stained, so I'm getting a waterproof cover that covers sides too, then putting down a large change pad followed by a crib sheet. Hopefully then I only ever have to change out the sheet and change pad. My bassinet, a travel PNP, is just the pad that comes with it, a fleece/microfiber/TPU change pad and a fitted sheet.
