Still not crawling...or even trying, anyone else??

DS just turned 8 months.  I know you shouldn't compare babies, but it's sometimes hard not to because my 1st and 2nd children were crawling & pulling up at 5 1/2 & 7 months...so DS#2 is a whole new ballgame to me.  He freaks out if he happens to topple over onto his belly from sitting.  He gets really mad if I so much as TRY to give him "tummy time" yet his immobility seems to make for a very frustrated, bored, and angry little baby :(

Anyone else with a LO still not crawling??  I find myself fighting feelings of resentment toward him since my other two were already so busy and active by this age and he's clingy and relies on me to play "for" him...I guess I just need some assurance that he's not the only one not crawling.  I worry about his development, but since he'e met all other milestones I think he's probably just fine.  The closest he gets to being mobile is turning in circles on his butt.

  • You're not alone. My DS didn't crawl until 8.5 months, and he started very suddenly. There was almost no transition, except for a few false starts where he would lean on his hands and lift his butt straight into the air and sit back down.

Like your LO, DS didn't want to be set on the floor at all. We did tummy time on the bed, but that didn't encourage crawling too much. What seemed to be his trigger was a visit from his 1-year-old cousin who crawled everywhere. He watched, completely fascinated. We put both boys on the floor surrounded by toys, and I sat on the floor with DS so that he felt secure. Watching his cousin totally made DS jealous, and he was crawling a week later.

  • I have a friend whose boys didn't crawl until 10 to 11mos. I'm not sure when her daughter crawled. There is such a huge range for "normal", I wouldn't worry.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • DD didn't crawl until 9.5 months.  Her dr was not concerned at all.  She never really tried and then one day she saw a ball she wanted and just crawled across the living room to it!  Easy-peasy!
  • I wouldn't worry. My son didn't crawl until 11 months, and then didn't walk until 15 months. If I were you, I'd be glad he isn't into everything yet! :)

  • Both of my girls started crawling at 8 1/2 months. I think that's actually pretty average. They started pulling up on furniture around the same time.

  • My DS never crawled.

He took his first unassisted steps at 13 months.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about. Just be thankful you don't have to do a lot of baby proofing yet!

  • My guy didn't crawl until 9 months, and he didn't start pulling up for about a week after that.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • DD didn't start crawling until she was 9 months. Now she is crawling, cruising, and climbing. It is hard not to compare though.

  • Some kids don't crawl, it's not really an official physical milestone. DS1 was about 9 months when he started, and DS2 army crawled around 89 months until he figured out crawling. Try not to stress!

  • My son didnt' crawl till 10ish months.  Before that he would lay on the ground and drag himself around like a slug.  I was worried he'd walk late but he walked at 13.5 months.

  • although we are not as old as your ds... my LO just started rolling over the end of last week... I have been reading for at least 2 months about younger babies who have been already rolling over for a while now.

at first I was really worried about it, but one day it just snapped, and I was like... I dont care... pedi said he is fine... he's fine... it'll happen when it happens... even if its a while more down the road...

  • DD crawled at 10 months and walked at 17 months.  Our pediatric neurologist diagnosed her as having a mild case of motor hypotonia.  She never received physical therapy and is doing fine now (she's 3).
  • Neither of my kids crawled until they were 9 months.

I have heard that sometimes babies who have toddlers and preschoolers in the house can be faster to reach motor milestones because they want to catch up to their siblings... but sometimes they are actually slow to take chances because they're nervous about the amount of chaotic activity around them.
