Logan won't eat or drink

He has been sick since Thursday night, and hasn't really eaten/drank since then.  It's been 5 days since he has had a good amount to eat and drink.  I'm more worried about the drinking.  He refuses everything!  Any suggestions?  His Pedi said any means possible because giving him an IV will be really hard and awful for him... but if doesn't start drinking he may have to get one tomorrow.  Yesterday I filled a syringe up with water and would force him to drink it an once at a time throughout the day... but now he acts scared of me... I don't know if that was cruel, or right, or wrong of me... IDK. I'm just trying... Any suggestions?

  • Have you considered letting him drink out of regular cup? It's new and exciting. Maybe messy but at this point Im sure you wouldn't care. Popsicles? Ice cubes in the mesh feeder? Regular bottled water? Fruit in a mesh feeder?

Yep... I tried all of that. He got interested in my McDonalds cup but then threw it across the room.

Watermelon was working on Sunday, but not anymore. :(  I think part of it is he doesn't trust me anymore.  I think I scared him yesterday by forcing the water through a syringe.  DH says "who cares, he needs to drink." and I agree but it's just heart wrenching to see him afraid of me when I try to give him a drink or food.  :(

  • I'm sorry, but at times like these when you don't know what's going on I'd be all over the crap food.  I'd be trying cake, ice cream, chocolate, marshmallows, etc.

As for liquids, did you try a milkshake?

  • If it doesn't totally gross you out, put him in the bath and get him really clean. Then, rerun the water and give him a straw and a cup to play with. He will be drinking bath water, but at least it's something.

Great idea!  I'm going to try some cake.  At least it's something.  He has lost 2lbs in 5 days.

I was thinking the exact same thing! Even just a cup in the bathtub?!

If he ends up enjoying it, good luck getting him to ever stop drinking bath water! LOL

Trust me, I understand MORE than you know.  With all the stuff we go through with DS1 I can't imagine all the side-eyeing I must get when people see what I have to feed him sometimes just to get him to eat.  It has nothing to do with what he prefers and everything to do with us JUST avoiding a hospitalization.  Good luck, my dear!!

Yes, this!  And throw a couple of washcloths in there.  DD just looooves to suck bathwater out of a washcloth.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, hang in there!

I don't know?!?!  Maybe it's like baby broth?

I agree with Melissa on her suggestion of the washcloth as well.  O can't help but suck and chew on it every time.
