lack of exercise- vent

I just need to whine...

My son is 3 months old. He is still not STTN and take little cat naps all day... I really dont have a set schedule for him yet. Before pregnancy I went to the gym often and had gotten my body to where I wanted it for the first time in my life. That was huge for me to be happy with my body because I have had image issue since childhood.

Now I am finding it almost impossible to workout. I purchased a kettlebell but between sheer exhaustion from being up half the night, and my LO's lack of napping I really dont get to use it. My SO works late so that I can be home so by the time he leaves work Im ready for bed.

I feel so frustrated and dissapointed in how I look now. Its all in my hips and thighs, they are jiggly and I am definetly carrying extra weight there. I breastfeed and know that I may be storing weight due to that as well.

Im considering getting a home treadmill but we have very little space and they are pricey! I just figured that if I invest in my own equipment I will be forced to workout...and maybe my LO will lay on his playmat and watch me run for 20-30 minutes (one can wish lol)

long vent! I guess I just need to know that Im not the only who feels like they are starting over with weight loss and toning. I take my LO for walks but we have had a rainy fall and winter is just around the corner. If he ever starts to STTN then I can go back to visiting the gym at 5 am. Thats what I used to do and I loved being there nice and early.

any advice or suggestions from moms who have been in this situation? I also try to watch what I eat and drink plenty of water. I have lost most of th baby weight... but Im a pant size bigger than before and have no tone left :(

  • It's frustrating to find time for anything for yourself with a newborn!  He's still small, so things will get better and eventually you guys will have a routine.  You also have to be realistic with your body expectations, it does take some time to bounce back even after the "weight" is gone, so don't get too down on yourself.

I personally wouldn't spend the money on the treadmill - running is not going to give you definition and get your pants to fit better.  It will do very little for you when your body gets used to doing the same 30 min run every day.  Once you can get your routine going and block out exercise time, try doing strength routines at a high intensity to where it's also a cardio workout, at home or the gym.  Building muscle will help you burn more fat and is the most effective use of your short time.

  • I have a few suggestions. My baby is three months as well and I've found it hard to work out but I'm starting to manage some exercise at home.  I'm still much larger than my prepregnancy size but it's slowly getting better.  I breastfeed too.

    1. It's a great idea to invest in a treadmill or something like that.  I have an elliptical and I put LO in her carseat so I can watch her while I work out.  The noise from the machine and the coziness of her carseat usually makes her fall asleep.  You could buy something used if you want to save some money.

    2. Browse the net for baby-and-me work out classes.  I am taking a baby and me yoga and plan to take baby-and-me cardio class and swim classes.  It gives you the chance to work out and spend time with baby.

    3. Do you pump and give bottles occasionally.  If so, have a moms-night-out once a week and leave your baby with your hubby (or a babysitter).  Go to the gym or for a jog.

    4. When the weather is good - long walks are great.  Power walk with your stroller or baby carrier and pick a route with lots of hills so you work up a sweat.  When your baby is a little older, you can use a jogging stroller.

  • You most certainly aren't the only one to feel that way. My kids are now preschool and elementary school age, but it is so hard to find time to workout when they are newborns. Honestly, I hung on to some weight the entire time I was breast feeding, and didn't lose it until after they weaned.

I love to run, and contrary to the pp I think you can get (and I have gotten) amazing leg definition and drop pant sizes (lost 20lbs and 2 pant sizes) from running. Although I wouldn't fall into the trap of thinking that just because you spent money on a treadmill you'll be guilted into using it. There is a reason most treadmills serve as a coat rack :)

First, I'd cut yourself some slack. Your LO is only 3 months old. Next, I'd focus on your eating habits. There are a number of programs out there that can help you track calories when breast feeding (check out myfitnesspal.com, livestrong.com, or fitday.com). I'd also try to get out for walks/runs (not sure where you live but you can bundle up and all get out even in the winter), and look into dvds or videos you can do at home. If you have cable on demand there are a number of free exercise videos.

    Hang in there!

  • I didn't read all the PP, but don't be so hard on yourself.  Newborns are hard, especially when you are BF and they don't STTN.  I was a slug the first three months because DD wanted to be held all day, and only by me, and we were BF.

Eventually your LO will STTN and you will find a routine.  It will get easier.  You will be able to work out again.  I am a fan of running, and it has worked for me.  At 3 mo. PP I had to buy some size 12 dress pants to go back to work.  Eventually I was able to run again and either take her (when she was big enough for the running stroller) or leave her with DH without screaming.  Fast forward to now and I just ran my second fastest 1/2 marathon one week shy of her first birthday and some of my size 8 PP pants are even feeling loose.  I know it's hard now, but hang in there!!

  • Totally there with you! my LO is 3 months as well.  Before baby I ran a lot and worked out all the time, I had a m/c in aug last yr so after that I was lacking in the working out, and when I found out I was pg again I was too scared to work out.  from both pg, I gained about 30+ pounds.  After my 6 week pp appt and got the green light to work out again I did well for about 2 weeks- then I dropped off.

I started back at work 3 weeks ago and my LO isn't STTN either.  I have off on Tues and Thrs and thought I could work out then, but now its getting cold out and I dont want to take LO out in the cold for a run.  My gym doens't have day care, so I just started this week going back.  I went on Sun, and I went Mon right after work. I don't get him from working out until after 6 so its pretty hard.

Look on craig's list for TM (I have been looking myself) also, work out DVDs, and even videos on you tube.  I think what we all gotta do it just make the time, write it on the calander that you will work out this time on this day.

its only been 3 months, and your still adjusting to a new life
