I am finalizing Camille's nursery and noticed that I don't have any books for her yet! What's your favorite children's books? Any recommendations? I grew up on Dr. Seuss!
My 2 year olds favorite book is hand hand fingers thumb which is a dr seuss type book that he has to have read to him at least once a day. A couple other good ones are Wherever you are my love will find you (super cute book) and how many kisses do you want tonight is a good one too.
Actually pretty much anything by Nancy Tillman, She writes very sweet books .

I adore Fancy Nancy and those books. Her books are about building vocabulary by using 'fancy' words. Love love love LOVE them.
I grew up on Little Critter (Mercer Mayer) and The Berenstein Bears. My favorite as a kid was The Berenstein Bears and the Spooky Old Tree. It's about three bears going through a spooky old tree, one carrying a rope, one a stick, and one a light. They end up going through some obstacles and using their items. "Do they DARE go up that spooky old stair? Yes they dare!" (And then they lose the rope, for example.) So then it says "One with a light, one with a stick and one with the shivers." My mom and I always then would shake our bodies and draw out the words as we read ' and one with the shiiiiIIiiiIIIivvvvVVVvvvEeeeEErs!"
I don't know why I loved that so much, but I did. So, my mom actually bought another copy of that book for my LO so I could pass it down. I'm SO EXCITED for when she's old enough to have her act it out with me.

We've always read daily/nightly to our kids from birth. When they started to move (@6 months old) it was harder to have them sit. At that time the ony books they really sat for was the "Pat the Bunny", "Pat the Cat" type books- they are very cute and interactive and they liked doing the activites in the book.
Oh my... I have an abundance of books... she already has her own shelf in the book case!
Half our books are French and half are English so that also doubles the amount...lol
The little Golden Books and Dr. Seuss are good. I also loved the Max books, Harry the Dirty Dog, Ferdinand, of course the Hungry Caterpillar. We recently received Chicka-Chika boom and several of the Skippyjon Jones books.

Jenni, my brother and I used to request that book EVERY night! Our mom even got us the tape so we could listen to it when we wanted before we could read. The dare thing is something we still say to each other to this day, even though we are both in our 30s!
Besides the Berenstein Bears, I love the Skippyjon Jones series, and my favorite children's book of all time is The Velveteen Rabbit. I can't read it without crying!
Just because I had no idea before DS, here's a general guideline of what he liked (types) and when:
For infants (0-12 months-ish): Board books. Short & rhyme-y.
For toddlers (say, 1-2 years-ish): Still board books, but can get a little longer with some story-line to them. Peek-a-boo books are great too. Loves to hear the same ones - over and over and over.
For over 2: Starting to have the patience to sit still for an entire 40+ page Dr. Seuss book. (I'm not kidding, just look!) Still loves the board book favorites, but can also appreciate silly stories and characters. Likes to flip pages AND doesn't always tear or crinkle them when he does!

With my son, early on, interactive books with touchable textures and interactive elements were his favorites. Also, books with good photos or illustrations of animals and everyday objects for learning words and things. Alphabet and counting books are always fun. Some specific picks:
Anything by Eric Carle - The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug etc
First 100 Words, Roger Priddy, and other books in the series (first 100 animals, abc's, numbers, etc)
Tails, Heads and almost anything by Matthew Van Fleet
Dr Seuss books are always good, but might not be appreciated by little ones until they are a bit older, my 2yo is just now starting to really enjoy them.
Jude Wayne - Born 4/23/10
Violet Patricia - Born 12/5/12
Breastfeeding, baby-wearing work-at-home mom of 2 living in Rockville, MD
I have a stack I bought over the years; Dr Seuss treasury, Beatrix Potter treasury love Peter Rabbit!, some Shel Silverstein, Mickey Mouse and friends set and Curious George. I also plan to get Robert Munch and Berenstein Bears when he/she gets older.
There are a lot of good suggestions here! I just wanted to add that DD was really, really destructive with books until she was over a year. Definitely stock up on board books or even chewing-friendly plastic books or cloth books. I wanted her to be able to look at books in the car seat but couldn't stop her from chewing on them, obviously. Books with paper pages were only safe in her hands at some point after 15 months

Eric Carle's books are a BIG hit in this house - Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear.
Little Blue Truck - just has a great rhyming flow and a great one for learning about animals!!
Hustler Magazine. Great photos - very visual.
Just kidding.
I would have to second the Berenstain Bears books and Dr. Suess books. My nieces also loved the Clifford (the big red dog) books.
I bought my niece Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre board books.

Outside of the classics (books by Richard Scarry, The Little Prince, Velveteen Rabbit) I usually just pick up what catches my eye.
