Working Moms

Well that sucked. (Sandy related and Q about daycare)

We're finally back in our home, and it's warm and dry (thank God!).  There are quite a few people who are now homeless (and some dead) so I'd be insensitive to complain any more.

Our daycare is still closed, though, so I'm now more than a week out of work and without care (my husband works for CNN and given the election coverage, his job was threatened if he calls out).  Would you think it reasonable or not likely for the daycare to reimburse us for all of the time they've been closed due to the storm?  (Why doesn't a daycare center have a generator? It's a big chain and they've got a lot of kids there).  What do you think?

Hope everyone else in the area fared okay.

  • That makes sense, hocus.  They charge by the month and don't discount vacations, sickness, etc., but in this instance, seems an exception should be made.  I hope they just do it on their own, because they are very nice and I know they feel bad about it, so I don't want to have to ask, but I shouldn't have to pay the price for a service that isn't even available.

  • I'm glad you are safe and well, but I doubt the daycare will refund you.  I imagine they still have to pay rent, utilities, salaries, etc. while they are closed.  Our NYC was closed all last week but we still paid everyone's salaries.

  • Our daycare just reimbursed us $277 for the three days they were closed.  Quite frankly, it was pretty unexpected.  We've never been reimbursed for weather related closings before.  FWIW, our big chain center doesn't have a generator either.  Generators big enough to power a large building are not cheap (several thousand dollars - plus maintenance, upkeep and storage) so it's not an investment I'd expect them to make.

In the meantime, can you find a sitter for a few days?  Maybe even someone from the center's staff?  They have been out of work for a week plus now too and they definitely won't be paid for this time.

Most importantly, I'm glad you are back home, safe and warm.

This, I wouldn't expect to be refunded. When DH, and I were out of work for 2 weeks due to Ike, we were paid for our loss time, and I would expect the same for the teachers at our daycare.

  • Also, I'm not sure a generator should be expected, and even if they had power, they could be looking at many of their staff not having power at home, or homes, or even being in the area. Aren't people having a tough time finding gas and groceries up there still?

  • Our daycare flooded and was closed for over a week last year.  We were refunded 1/2 the tuition immediately and then got the other half when they got paid by insurance.  I would be upset about paying when they're not providing the service, even though it's somewhat outside of their control.  I would really doubt that many daycares have generators.

  • I would not expect to be reimbursed for the time the daycare was closed because our daycare does not reimburse for weather related closings.  I live in an area of ice storms that can sometimes close schools (and daycares) for over a week. We are left to find backup care or flex our schedules during those times.

Glad you are safe and hope your daycare re-opens soon.

She should be reimbursed.  The business will have insurance for natural disasters.  Which are different than snow or ice closures that happen from time to time.  Even though you were still paid, the company (likely) received insurance money for "time lost"

  • I would ask about getting reimbursed- it's very likely that DC has insurance that covers these situations.  As PP suggested, if you can get in contact with any of the DCPs, they might be willing to sit for you until the center re-opens.

I wouldn't expect a DC to have a generator- I think they have the special safety lights that can run off batteries so they can evacuate, but large scale generators are increadibly expensive and keeping a DC up and running is not a life or death priority.

  • I would read your contract and handbook over with a fine tooth comb. I remember that somewhere in our handbook it says "weather related" and something about "unforeseen circumstances" can cause XYZ to close blah blah tuition is still due.
  • I'm glad you survived Sandy and are safe and well!  I would think a portion of the tuition will be reimbursed. I can imagine several parents complaining until something is given back. Hopefully, they will now buy a generator for the future.

  • We were closed all last week and we had a bill for the full month waiting for us yesterday.

  • Just food for thought - our daycare is a tenant in a small office park, if they had a generator, it would have to be provided by and maintained by the property owner - it wouldn't be a simple matter of some one running out to Home Depot.

  • Update-still no power at the daycare, and the owner sent everyone a text message saying, "Rest Assured, you will be adequately credited/reimbursed." So, that's good!

  • I think a 1-2 day loss wouldn't warrant a reimbursement, but anything 3 days or more SHOULD.  That being said, I don't know if they are required to or not.
