Parenting after a Loss

Oversupply

DS is two weeks old. He's my 2nd baby and according to my LC, oversupply is common in 2nd babies. So it's causing some feeding and fussiness issues. My letdown is really fast and he chokes and coughs. LC said to try and lay back and not lean forward, seems to help a little. I am also taking him off the breast after 5 min or so to burp him since he swallows so much air. He spits up a lot like 2 or 3 or 4 times after each feeding. And he cries and fusses a lot which I think is from gas. Also, since he gets so frustrated at the breast, he tends to get a lot of formilk and less of he fatty hind milk and is hungry more often.

My engorgement has improved and I notice DS is doing a little better day by day. But here are still a few times each day where he screams and screams. It breaks my heart, he's so little! My DD never did this.

any advice?

Thanks ladies.

Ps. I didn't forget about posting his birth story, still bumping on my phone! Internet has been sporadic since Sandy. And we have another storm coming tomorrow.

Re: Oversupply

  • Oh no.  I'm scared of having #2 now because I dealt with horrible oversupply with DS #1!  I can't imagine it getting worse!

It felt like it took forever for us to work past the oversupply issues, and it broke my heart every day to hear DS crying because he was hungry and wanted comfort, and the one thing that was supposed to provide him with both of those things just made him more upset because it make him choke.

Unlatching him during let down and letting the milk spray into a prefold diaper helped some.  I went through a lot of laundry but it was worth it to limit some of his choking.  The side-lying nursing position seemed to help some too (be sure to have an absorbent prefold/towel/burp cloth beneath you because there's lots of dripping).  Mostly though, it just took time.  My body has never been able to figure out the whole supply and demand thing, so supply has remained unnecessarily high for the duration of our nursing relationship but with age, DS became quite capable of dealing with the fast flow.

Hang in there!  I know how much oversupply can suck!

  • Yep over supply sucks. No comfort nursing. Have to force you baby to stop eating so they don't get sick. If you are worried about to much foremilk you could always pump before a feeding til you let down and then feed baby. Not every feeding but maybe right before bed or nap so he would stay full longer and sleep better. Just a thought. I have both over supply and and extremely forceful letdown. Poor kid just coughs and gags at ever feeding. Good news is either the kid will adjust or you supply letdown will. It takes time and really theirs not a lot you can do other than take him off wait and try again. Rather than a diaper I always had a bottle close by to catch all the extra in. One of the small 2.5 oz ones worked great and I didn't feel like all that milk was wasted.

  • Have you tried block feeding?  That tends to help with a foremilk imbalance.

You also may have a colicky baby.  Colic tends to rear it's ugly head around 2w old.  If so, it sucks, but it will get better with time.

Can you tell me what block feeding is? I never heard of it.

Thanks for all the advice ladies! I hope with time it will get better. Wish me luck =

I still do this if he hasn't nursed in a while and I'm really full. I always mean to have a bottle ready to catch the extra (hate to waste it) but I never seem to have one around when I need it.

block feeding is when you feed on one side for a predefined amount of time [2 3 or even 4 hours] any time baby wants to eat you feed on demand but only from one side for the whole time. Then you switch to the other side for the same amount of time. I do during the day since W will sometimes eat every 45 mins if he gets sleepy but only eat for 5 mins at a time.

. This really helped out a lot with both my daughters. I feed mine on each side twice before switching sides. My LC also had me cut out dark beer be cause of the brewers year and anything acidic and had me taking Lecithin to make my milk "fattier" instead of too sugary.

  • Ah yes, I have been doing that. I didn't know it had a name! It has been helping. DS is still really fussy at times. I just remember DD didn't get fussy till about 6 weeks. I guess every baby is different, but it still has me worried of course.
