Ok...so...about nipple stimulation...

I asked about your rankings of the different induction methods earlier and left out the standard, more old-wives-tale-like methods like sex and spicy foods and all those because I've been trying most of them unsuccessfully for over a week now. The one I've been avoiding though is the nipple stimulation because, honestly, and I'm embarrassed to say this, I'm not sure how it should be gone about. So...do you just rub your nips? Does it have to be enjoyed to work and release the hormones it's supposed to? Is a breast pump going to be my best bet? Thanks for not calling me dumb to my face Wink

  • You aren't dumb :)

Nipple stim can be done a lot of ways.  Some people prefer to pump, some to roll the nipple gently in their fingers, other prefer their partner to suck on them.  I'm not sure about your enjoyment question, but I would guess that if it's painful for you or otherwise causing you more tension than relaxation, then not as much oxytocin is going to be released.   That's purely a guess.

I agree with this. I have most commonly heard of women pumping.

Agreed.  I'm sure there's some element of the hormone being released regardless, but it's probably better if it's at least a positive feeling for you.

You could also gently rub a washcloth dampened with warm water over them.  Or... I guess it doesn't have to be wet since it will still be textured.

  • First of all, sex is not an old wives' tale. Prostaglandins in semen ripen the cervix just the same way as their artificial counterpart that inductions are made of. So, there's that.

Nipple stimulation releases oxytocin, which promotes labor contractions. Feeling relaxed and is important. Have your partner do it. I feel like the stimulation is so much more...stimulating.... when it's not me.
