How would you rank the different induction methods?

I'm preparing to have to discuss this with my OB tomorrow, especially if I haven't made any more progress so I was wondering how you ladies would rank all the different methods of induction (in order of most desirable to least desirable) should it be needed. If I forget any, please include them!

Membrane sweep

AROM

Cervadil

Cytotec

Foley Bulb

Pitocin

Castor Oil

...I feel like I am forgetting something...

Re: How would you rank the different induction methods?

  • I am not a big fan of induction at all as I believe the baby will come when it is ready (currently 40w1d and waiting myself), but I might consider a membrane sweep if I were really desperate and already at or approaching 42 weeks.

Oh, I most certainly don't want an induction but I know my OB is going to want to start discussing the "what if's" tomorrow so I thought it'd be a good idea to have an idea of where I'd want to start. Buuuttt...I'm not too sure where that'd be so that's why I was asking Smile

  • Membrane sweep

    AROM

Are the only two I would consider without being under extreme circumstances...

If it were dire, I'd then consider pitocin and the Foley bulb.

Say no to cytotec, IMO. And I wouldn't touch castor oil either, if it did help, you'd feel so miserable from its effects on top of labor pains. And that doesn't sound like a fun time to me.

What about some good ol' sex? Or ...masturbation? If we are going along the lines of castor oil, I'd much prefer to try semen and contractions coming from an O...

I don't know if this helps at all, but...
Good luck, Lolly! I hope you get to meet your LO soon.

  • Before any of those I would try walking, sex, EPO, and nipple stimulation. Then I would say membrane sweep, castor oil, Foley, arom, then the meds starting with the cervix softeners.

  • I guess I would try the following in the following order:
    1) Sex/nipple stimulation
    2) Walking
    3) EPO
    4) Acupuncture/acupressure
    5) Membrane sweep
    6) Foley bulb/cervadil
    7) Pitocin (at the lowest level)
    8) AROM

I would not accept cytotec, personally.

  • The other more natural methods people mentioned (sex, walking, EPO) first.

    Membrane sweep

    Foley Bulb

    Cervadil

    AROM

    Pitocin

Until cytotec is proven to be safe for inducing labor, I will not consent to its use. I also have no desire to make myself sick with Castor Oil.

  • Cervadil put me into labor, from 1cm to full on contractions in just a few hours. I didn't need the pit that the dr was going to start in the morning.

  • The only things I would feel comfortable with are the membrane sweep and MAYBE castor oil if I were desperate to avoid the other measures.

  • Acupuncture would be my go to after walking, O, etc...I am an acupuncturist and I do labor inductions frequently...most women respond by the third treatment if they are going to respond. Success rate is around 70%. Needles are very fine - nothing like a shot. Women can nap on their side while getting 40 minute treatment. Usually we see increase in contractions and/or baby movement during/immediately after treatment. I will do induction as early as 38 weeks if there is a lot of pressure from provider to deliver at 40, but ideally do treatments after term. I usually encourage clients to schedule ~every other day in last week to 10 days before medical induction is scheduled.

  • Not a fan of most techniques.  I allowed my OB to sweep my membranes but have heard of them accidentally breaking your bag of water so thats a risk.  You won't go into labor unless your body is ready.  I had mine swept at 38/39/40 weeks and it never did anything.

AROM - if you're alread on your way into transition, not a problem - do not do it if no contractions and not really in labor.  A good way to end up having a csection.

Cervadil - cytotec and pit - try to avoid.  Your baby will be more healthy and happy if they can arrive on their own.  Seriously.

foley bulb - just no, don't do it.

Castor oil - PLEASE don't do this!  dangerous.  I work in the NICU / L&D areas - I've seen terrible things happen with castor oil.
