I wouldn't give him anything specific. It's hard to predict what he will be packing, it depend a lot on what countries/climate he will be visiting and will he be camping or doing the hostel thing. Even guide books are tough, you only want to carry one or maybe two and people are very particular about which one they bring. I think cash (or even better, convert them to Euros in your bank for him) would be the most helpful! Or, you could pay for his smart phone to have wireless/international access during that period, that would be awesome.
I did but it was in 1996... Long ago, pre EU and in a cheaper time for young ppl...but ditto the others, I would find out where he plans to buy stuff and get a gift card or offer to put money toward gear or a rail pass. Or even money but package it cute somehow or with some small things he could use...
Do ppl still use money belts? That was a huge thing for me, made me feel so much more secure w my money and passport and train pass, I even slept w it under my pillow when we were in less secure hostels or had to share rooms w strangers.
I was going to suggest money too, but like the poster about the money belt. I keep my passport and money close to my body. There is one that goes across your chest that I really like.
A lot of it is just easier when he gots over there...
Exciting for him!

Yes. Both Europe and Central America. Backpack was purchased at REI. Honestly, I don't remember exactly what I needed. Things are different now than they were 12 yrs ago. :-)
Re: Has anyone "backpacked through Europe"?
I have. You could get him gift cards to Altrec or REI. They both sell stuff that he would need for the trip.
Active/Tech fabric clothes that are lightweight.
Has he gotten a backpack yet? Eagle Creek brand has some great ones.
PackTowl Ultra light towel
collapsible water bottle
camera
Swiss Army Knife
I'll come back later and post more.
Guidebooks.
Euros.
A rail pass.

Rei has great stuff. Things that are lightweight easy to carry lots of versatility and easy to wash (in a sink and can air dry)
I have! Depending on your price range:
- Rail tickets
- Travel guides/maps if you know where he intends to go
- Nice backpacking bag (I love my Kelty)
- Lightweight sleeping bag
- Lightweight clothes
- Camera
I highly recommend the pack/light weight towel. They dry quickly and take up hardly any space.
A good pair of shoes?
If you go the backpack route, it's best to take him shopping, as different bags work better for different builds of people.
How exciting for your bother. I had a blast.

There's no way I'm buying him anything as person-specific as a backpack! He's very picky.
Thanks for your suggestions ladies! I like the light weight towel idea- perhaps with some other toiletry items.

It is such a great experience, good for him!

A sleep sack. He can use it on top of the sometimes nasty hostel beds.
