Price of infant care

Are any other second-time moms surprised by the current cost of infant care? I asked recently at my three year-old son's daycare and was surprised by how much the price has gone up since our son was an infant, especially given the low rate of inflation and generally stagnant wages over the last three years. We're at an employer-subsidized Bright Horizons, and the price is still quite high. Without the subsidy, it must be insane. But I guess that is what the market will bear, as even at these prices, infant spots appear to be scarce.

Re: Price of infant care

  • Everywhere we looked even when I was pg with ds1 was high with long waitlists but we are inside the city.  I think our current school has only gone up $100 in 3 years and they still have a long wait list. It could be that your company isn't subsidizing the daycare as much as they were.

  • In the almost 3 years at ours, our price has increased once (about a month ago) by $40/month. They handed out comparisons to the neighboring centers around us, so it looks like many have also gone up as well.

I love that  they justify screwing you over by showing you how you could get screwed over at other facilities, too.  SMH.

Unfortunately since I have been providing the childcare nobody has been paying me any more. I need to bring this to DH's attention....

It's intown child care. They know you have no other choice.

  • Ours is intown, too, and it has gone up by almost three hundred per month. Maybe the subsidy has been reduced, or maybe Bright Horizons is just really, really profitable...

The cost for our son's care has gone up every year, too, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. When we first enrolled, they told us the price goes down each year as the child gets older, but then the yearly increase in tuition rates basically ate that reduction.

  • Remind me again to never complain about the prices I pay for daycare. In the four years I've been with our facility, the prices have jumped once. Our current cost for DS is only $10 a week more in the infant room than it was to send my daughter to the infant room four years ago.

It makes me doubly-thankful that the price I pay for two kids, is comparable to infant rates for one child in town. And I'm still ITP.

$300 per month?  Holy hell - that is a lot.  While DD is not at a corporate daycare, that still seems pretty crazy.  I guess since ours is a non-profit the rates are still lower than other Midtown-area centers.

  • We're intown and infant would now be $1600/month.  Not sure what BH you're talking about, but I know the subsidy at the GT/Home Park one is a couple hundred per month so maybe the company did stop subsidizing so much.

  • $1600 per month?!! I guess I shouldn't complain. It looks like our subsidy isn't too bad after all. That's $1600 with a $200 subsidy? Why is BH so expensive? Or are other high-quality daycare centers this much? It's been a few years since we looked. I'm thinking I might start looking around even though we're guaranteed a spot at our BH. Does anyone know what intown Primrose and Suzuki centers charge for infants? Are there others that are worth considering?
  • My older two go to suzuki northside. Full time infant care for 2012-2013 is $1575. It goes down to $1525 after level 1. Part time care for M,W,F is $1175 (this is what my boys do).

DS3 will not be starting until next June. I couldn't get him in this year b/c I waited to long but thankfully I have extremely flexible hours so we're waiting a year. If you are even remotely considering Suzuki you need to get on the wait list. Even the sibling wait list for level 1 and 2 is long.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear.  We don't go to BH actually.  I think it's about $1350ish with the subsidy.  Primrose is $1600... :-/  I think Suzuki is about equal.  PM me if you have any other questions I might be able to help with.  I can probably give you a few other specific intown places to look that are not quite as obvious and are a bit lower (and you may actually be able to get in to)!

  • Thanks, but it sounds like our BH center isn't such a bad deal after all. I think we'll stick with it. I just can't believe how much more expensive infant care has gotten.
  • Hi, Would you be able to tell me about any others in the midtown area that are lower. I have been searching but there arent that many that come up. Not sure if I am missing something but they all seem to have long wait lists as well. Not sure what I am going to do If i cant find a place. thx
