NPR: DS's chapped hands what to use?

My son is is preschool now and they make him wash his hands a million times a day which I love but his hands are red and raw and look so painful!

Any ideas what I can use on them? I've been using Eucerin Cream and it works alright. What do you think about aquaphor at bedtime? Any other really good moisturizers that I should try?

  • I think the aquaphor at bedtime is a good idea.  If you can sneak in before you go to bed and slather a little more on him, that might help too. GL!

  • You are on the right track! I love aquaphore! And putting more on him when you Tintoretto bed is smart.I was a swimmer and Vaseline used to make a waterproof lotions I would put on before swimming. Maybe that or a light layer of aquaphore right before preschool as a protective barrier?

I wish.  I'll have to negotiate some more.  I can barely get him to agree to once before bed :)

I'll sometimes put lotion on DDs hands and then have them put socks on them at night.  They think it's quite the thing and sometimes just put socks on just because even without lotion.  Would that make him more willing to put lotion on?

  • neutrogena norwegian formula then top it off with Aquafor and make him wear gloves! I know its going to be hard!
  • For kids with excels they suggest aquaphor and a lotion called cerave(sp)
  • We used to deal with this a lot at the elementary school that I worked at. The nurse would slather their hands with Aquaphor and put latex gloves on them. It worked wonders!

  • My Ds is a thumb sucker, so I have to be careful what I put on his hands. In the winter, his lil thumb gets chapped and raw and I used Lanolin on it (the same stuff you use for chapped nipples while nursing.) It works great! But to slather on whole hands might get pricey. GL!

  • Put Vaseline on his hands at night and have him wear gloves while he sleeps. I?ve done this with my feet before and it makes a huge difference.

  • In addition to the nighttime routine with Aquaphor, during the daytime before school and right after, you could try Burt's Bees baby lotion.  It's great, soaks in, but is still fairly heavy.  It's the best for my son's chronically dry skin.
