I am planning on speaking with my doctor obviously but was hoping that some of you ladies had some insight. Is your doctor okay with you laboring at home unmonitored for an extended period of time? With my DD I went to the hospital and I was about 4 cm. I think we were just excited/nervous and thought it was time to go to the hospital. Looking back it would have been much nicer to be comfortable at home during more of the labor. I feel once I get to the hospital everything will slow down because of the monitoring, being in a strange place, people bothering me etc.
Just curious what others had heard. I feel good with staying at home longer but my mom got me worried but saying I'm sure your doctor will want you there early to monitor you etc.
Re: Laboring at home
Here's a post about laboring at home: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/69038030.aspx
My MW said to stay at home until labor was well established. I ended up getting to the hospital at 10 cm (I dilated really quickly all of the sudden), but I was also hoping to show up pushing.
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
On the record, they have told me to come in as early as possible so I can be closely monitored. Off the record, they have told me my chances of a successful VBAC will go up the longer I labor at home.
I will stay home as long as I can take it. I would prefer for my water to break on it's own (while I'm already in active labor ideally) so they won't rupture them for me to put in the monitor. I don't want to be put on a time clock before I have to.
My last labor went from 3 centimeters at check-in to ready to push four hours later, so I don't plan on laboring at home for long based on past experience. But my hospital also has wireless monitoring that can be used in the birthing tubs, and I've got a doula there to advocate for me and run interference (we are hoping to go med-free), and with a toddler at home I think I might actually be more comfortable in the hospital as weird as it sounds (it's a really nice, progressive hospital).
If I wasn't so confident in my doctor and hospital, and didn't have a history of fast labors, I would be more apt to labor at home. Asking the doctor what her expectations are for you monitoring and if you will be able to walk around and labor in different positions would be a deciding factor for me.
I labored at home for a good amount of time but also knew I wanted an epidural so I went in and was about 6cm. My water did not break so they broke it at the hospital.
But, I had a failed VBAC so I don't know if this helps or not! But my doctor was supportive of me laboring at home.
My MW recommended the typical 5-1-1 to head to the hospital. She said in not VBAC moms they usually recommend 3-1-1, but would prefer to have me there a little earlier for (wireless) monitoring. I'll definitely keep that recommendation in mind and we'll see how I'm feeling.
I'm planning for an unmedicated birth so I want to labor at home as long as possible for a variety of reasons. At the same time, I'm extremely confident in my MW's support of me having a VBAC and she will be with me the entire time in the hospital, so it might be nice to have her support in person. Also, I will have access to a birthing tub at the hospital that's nicer than my bathtub at home, so that's a motivator to head in when my MW has requested as well
