Baby Showers

How to handle long distance for showers

So this past weekend I was at home - I was throwing my sister a bridal shower. I told my parents that I am PG and of course my mom already wanted to start planning my shower with my sister (this is the first baby for both DH and I). The problem is all of my family and a number of my friends still live in MD while DH and I live in TN. Not that I am expecting a bunch of large gifts, but how do you handle potentially transporting a number of gifts? Obviously clothes and small things can fit in a spare suitcase but I definitely do not want to drive 16 hours just in case we get large items.

Is it wrong for my mom to suggest or let people know if items being purchased are too big to fit in a suitcase/easily taken with us on a plane then maybe shipping it to us directly would be the best way to give us those items?

TIA

Re: How to handle long distance for showers

  • Trust that your guests are smart and will figure it out.

But, other options are to not register for big stuff.  Or leave some time to possibly return the big items before you go home and rebuy in TN.  Or just deal w/ shipping it yourselves.

DO NOT pass this expense onto your guests.  Accept what they give you and deal w/ it.

  • Anyone invited to a shower for you should know that you live out of state and that large gifts would be difficult to take home.  If someone happens to get something for you that is too big to take with you, you can return it and re-purchase it when you get home.

    This is good advice!

  • I just had a shower this past weekend and it was out of town (about a 5 hour drive) and my guests were pretty aware of travel with bigger things.  The only big item that was given at the shower was the pack n play which fit easily in my trunk.   I did however had a couple of aunts print a picture of what they wanted to buy (the carseats) and then inside the card with the picture was a gift card to get them.

I also attended a shower for my cousin earlier this year in Texas and she lives in Nevada and people also seemed to understand she was flying so big things were harder.  I know she got a couple of big things but she just paid to ship them to her house and after talking with her it didn't cost her too much to ship them.

The other idea is great as well, return things and get the store credit then re-buy when you get home.

  • Thanks for all the advice! I haven't been to many baby showers before so I did not know if people preferred to ship gifts as much as they seem to do for wedding showers. The idea of returning/repurchasing is a good idea too.

  • I think all the ideas mentioned are great.  Definitely if there is an option on your registry to put your address if guests prefer to ship gifts directly to you then do that.  I would never request that they ship larger items though.  Returning them and repurchasing them locally in TN seems the way to go if you need to.

  • I'm in PA and have family in FL, MI and OH. I'm not expecting them to come for a baby shower, and spend hundreds of dollars making their way up here to not even see the baby yet. I expect to get a few gifts in the mail.

  • I live in NC and my shower is in STL. I registered at amazon and diapers.com, only online with  free shipping to encourage people to do that. If they don't, we'll ship stuff or return for store credit.

  • My family lives in MI, DH and I live in Kansas City. This issue is one of the main reasons why I registered at Amazon. I am hoping most of our gifts for our shower at the end of the month in MI are shipped to us. We are driving and what doesn't fit in our vehicle will be have to be shipped home.

  • My shower was in CA and I live in TN. I mostly got clothes and gift cards. I packed it all in a huge suit case, a carry on and I shipped a small box of diapers. Only 1 person had a gift shipped and the host wrote on the invitation to ship gifts to our house (I had no idea she was writing this on the invitation).
