At home insemination

Can anyone offer advice on this?  My husband and I are going to attempt our first at home insem in December.  The ladies in the TTC board recommended that I post here for any advice.  Any advice you ladies can offer me would be greatly appreciated!

Re: At home insemination

  • We tried for a year at home using a known donor (not from a sperm bank) and fresh samples.  I highly recommend using OPKs and temping/charting to ensure you maximize your chances each cycle.  We just used a kids medicine syringe to insert it and I laid with my hips propped for about 30 minutes.   Unfortunately we were not successful at home because we did not know all my hormones were completely off.

Using a sperm bank, this last time, we decided to go with a doctor as the sperm is rather pricey and I was scared about the handling at home.  Our RE was awesome as the cycles were very timed so it was easy to order sperm when we needed it.

The FAQs will have a lot of information in them and I recommend checking those out.  Best of luck!

  • My wife & I used the ClearBlue Easy fertility monitor and then "googled" turkey baster method. From there we were able to get the "tools" needed. We have a donor (not thru a sperm bank bc its expensive) and it worked on the 2nd attempt, We plan on using this method again to conceive our future children. My wife also started taking pre-natal vitamins long before the "procedure"

I am sure you know all of this already, but just wanted to share what worked for us. We are due May 1, 2013.

  • The actual "how to" is pretty easy and has been discussed on here before.  Most of us who have done this used a 3-5 cc oral syringe (you can get them from the pharmacy for free or buy the ones for administering medicine to kids) and a sterile specimen cup (although any clean, DRY container works).  It's recommended you prop up your hips and stay there for 30 mins.  Our clinic recommended every 24 hours during DW's fertile period.  If you have any male factor infertility issues (low sperm count or motility), then sometimes every other day is recommended.
