Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Throwing food

My baby loves table  food and eats quite a bit, but as she starts to get full, she will throw handfuls on the floor, then go back to eating a little more, then throw more.

DYT she's too young for me to take the tray away once she starts throwing? I dont know if she'd "get it" yet but omg the messes...we rent and have to eat on carpet. Its hard to clean up without getting the vacuum out at every meal.

Re: Throwing food

  • Yep, at that point I stop giving her more.  I also only put a little on her tray at a time so she can't just swipe the whole pile off the tray.

I feel you on renting.  We had to pay to replace the carpet in the dining area of 2 apartments from ds.  Now we have tile and it's great.

  • Ditto pp about putting only a little bit on the tray at a time.  We live in an apartment too but I picked up a cheap splash mat at BRU (8.99 I think) and it has definitely saved the carpet under his high chair.

Plus the dog helps keep it clean by eating up his "leftovers" and a quick wipe afterwards is all it needs.

  • We rent also and DS, just started this a couple nights ago. Last night I put a towel down, because I was tired of him dropping food, then after getting out of his high chair, eating it. We also don't own a vacuum... GL. Oh and I agree with PPs, put less on the tray :] we, err I try to do that.

  • We do small amounts at a time and if the throwing continues we say "All done" and get him down. It may mean that he has to have a snack before bedtime but I'm not about to give the impression that throwing our food on the floor is acceptable.

This.  DD will either drop things just to drop them or she feeds the dogs and that's when she's done.

  • we rent as well and my son does the same exact thing! like pp smaller amounts and we put a dollar store table cloth down to cover more space. dinner time is also known as the war zone watch where you walk!
