Hi ladies,
I usually am on the single parents board but I have a question and I'm not getting any answers over there so I was hoping you ladies could help me.
The other day I found out that my son and I were invited to go on a cruise to the Bahamas for 4 days in January. Do I have to tell his father that we are going? I just dont want to not tell him and him find out and then I get into trouble because I am taking him out of the state. If he tells me I can't take him then what? Everything is already paid for. It really wouldnt take away from his time with him since he only sees him 1-2 times a month.
What should I do?
Thank you!
Re: Lurker with a question
Does your son need a passport for the trip? I believe you need both parents' signature for that (I could be wrong).
Honestly, you're not just taking him out of state; you're taking him out of the country. Does your CO address this at all? I don't know if you are legally obligated to tell him, but I definitely think you should.
If he tells you no, ask for his reasoning and listen. Then if you disagree with him/think his reasons are wrong, consult with an attorney to see what options you have.
He doesn't need a passport just his birth certificate with the raised seal.
It unfortunetly does not address this. All we ever discussed was his regular visitation and holiday visitation.
I think I may just tell him anyway just so I can keep the peace.
I really hope he doesn't say no.
Thank You!
thats a really good idea. I didnt even think of that!
Thank you
Thank you ladies! I'm definetly going to let him know and make sure I have everything printed out so I can give it to him. I think I'm going to have a letter printed out saying that he gives his consent to go and have it signed just so I can cover all my bases so there arn't any fights.
Thank you for all of your help
If you have your child's BC and they see two parents listed on the BC who aren't married, they will often ask for the letter of consent from the other parents, since cruises are often out of the country (private island, Bahamas, etc.) If you have a passport they will not ask for the letter of consent because both parents have to sign for a child to have a passport, and it is then assumed that both parents consent to the child traveling out of the country.
His father and I were not married when he was born. So I defineetly need to get one. I just hope he doesn't refuse to sign it.
Thank you ladies for all of your help I really appriciate it!
We get along for the sake of DS but thats really it. I'm 100% going to tell him. Like you said I dont want to come home to a huge mess saying i kidnapped him or anything. I really appriciate everyones advice.
I really hope he doesnt give me any problems. It's a Disney cruise and DS LOVES Mickey!
