Cheese plate ideas??

We are participating in a progressive dinner of sorts on Saturday.  DH and I are hosting the appetizer stage and have chosen to have a cheese plate/wine tasting. I wanted to do something a little classier because most of the guests are big foodies.  But, I'm not sure what to do...there are tons of options. Has anyone have any good pairing ideas?

Re: Cheese plate ideas??

  • Hmmm, I am not great at the wine pairing part (since I will drink anything) but I just saw a good article on making a nice cheese plate.  Let me see if I can dig it up.

  • Cheese can get EXPENSIVE....

That being said, I got some Saga Blue/Brie the other night and a Fig spread, DELICIOUS! Goes best with some plain "Water Table Crackers" or Crostini.

ETA:  Got both n the cheese section of the local supermarket.  For Wine, you could get a Pinot Noir.  It's light and (In my opinion) goes with almost anything. I miss wine.  Mirrasou makes a nice bottle at under $11.

  • I couldn't find the exact article, but here are some cheese plate recipes from Martha Stewart.

Also a big hit at my book club for cheese plates are those crackers/bread-things with the dried fruit and nuts in them.  For the life of me I cannot remember what they are called, but they sell them at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

  • Thanks ladies!  I am heading to Trader Joe's & Whole Foods this week.  I forgot to use Pinterest and of course Martha.  I know it can get pretty spendy so I wanted to get some advice!

  • Figs! You can't go wrong with figs.

I may have to go break into the Brie and fig spread for lunch.  :)

  • If you ask someone in the wine or cheese section at Whole Foods, they should be able to recommend some good pairings.  I've always had great success with that.  I tell them my budget, and they give me recommendations-they are expected to do that for customers.  They have never steered me wrong!

  • Instead of whole foods/trader joes, do you have a cheese store near you?  I love my cheese store for so many reasons, but the one that's most helpful to you is that when they ring up your cheese, the receipt has a list of good pairings for each cheese purchased - both wine and complementary foods.

Oh, duh!! I totally forgot about The Cheese Shop :)  I will be making a trip for sure.  It's a cheese shop and a gourmet foods store, so I'm sure they will have some great paring ideas.

    Thanks everyone for the tips!
