At the ER with Logan

Well, his fever spiked to 105.6. I called the on call pedi woke him up and he told me not to worry over that temp and to give him a bath. I did and my poor baby threw up and cried for nearly 30 mins straight. Fever still 105. I decided to take him to the ER. My pedi said on Friday that he had Rotovirus even tho he had no symptoms of Rotovirus expect for throwing up once turns out he has bronchitis. He got poked and prodded with needles and other devices and a nice shot in the butt, but he should be feeling better by morning. Thank you Jesus... And modern medicine.

Now my question is... Wouldn't you be concerned over a 105.6 fever? My pedi said not to worry unless it reaches 106107. Ummm... I really don't want to question him, but WTF????!?!???? The pedi here at the ER said I did the right thing and that she recommends the ER for anything over 103 for a toddler his age. When I told her he said 106107 she look shocked but tried to hide it in a professional manner.

Re: At the ER with Logan

  • I am so sorry about Logan! I hope he feels better real soon!

As far as the pedi, I would be finding a new one.

  • Glad you followed your instinct! Everything I have ever read says either 103 or 104. I'd be looking for a new pedi.

    Hope he feels better soon!

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry. I hope he feels better soon. I'd get a new pedi too
  • You absolutely made the right decision. Fevers are so dangerous.

Our pedi office says for temps of 103104 to bring them in or call the horline and anything above that, to go straight to the ER. How could your pedi even say he has rotovirus unless he's puking for hours straight? Plus, your pedi should have checked him out thoroughly enough to catch any other problems!

I'm glad that he's starting to feel better. Seriously, you made the right choice.

  • I'd be getting a new pedi too.  Wrong diagnosis and 107?! fever.  I think if my fever was that high I would be in the ER myself.

  • Ooh poor baby! You did the right thing. I'm shocked that the pedi would let something like that go.

  • Oh geez, that would have scared me. I would have done the same thing.
  • I have heard both opinions on fevers so I don't think your pedi is that far off. however, that said, my momma instincts would've insisted on an er visit, too.

Did Logan have a rotovirus shot?

    Isn't rotovirus still given orally?

As for the pedi, I don't think it matters what they say over the phone.  There is a real live patient that needs to be seen and examined.

103 and acting fine, maybe a little lethargy?  I could probably get behind that...  However, I've never seen my kids get that high and had them be acting semi-normal.  Mom instincts always win.

Obv, since this was the on-call pedi you don't need to find a new pedi, but I would follow-up with your regular doc and discuss your capacity to handle your child's illnesses.  If you're uncomfortable waiting until 106, you're not going to wait until 106.  If he's 103, lethargic and vomiting, WE'RE COMING IN!!  No hesitation.  Your doctor should support your call in the heat of the moment.

  • Poor Logan! Thank goodness for modern medicine is right!

I guess I can see your pedi's point of view. The general consensus here that you should bring your child to the Dr if they have a fever of 103-ish that lasts for over then 48 hours, OR you bring them in right away if the fever is 105+

Still, I would have brought him in, regardless of what the pedi suggested. I hope he's feeling better today ::hugs::

  • Poor baby!  I'd be finding a new pedi as well.  My dad lost his hearing as a toddler from a high fever.  When things start to get above 104 I start to worry because high fevers can have serious consequences.  You did the right thing.

  • Wow, he must feel awful! Poor guy! And yes, I am shocked they weren't concerned about 105.

  • I feel like anything over 104 would send me to a doctor or ER.  Illness-wise, we haven't dealt with anything this serious, but I can't imagine being okay with a fever of 105.6!  I think you definitely did the right thing by following your instincts and going to the ER, I most likely would have done the same.  Hope Logan is feeling better!

  • Thank ladies.  I did some research and my pedi was right about fevers, but he should have told me about it. what I read said that our brains will make sure we don't go over 105.  A temp of 105 is extremely uncomfortable, but won't cause any 'damage.' unless for a prolonged period of time. If a temp goes above 105, then be concered bc that means something is wrong with our bodies natual tempature regulator. But  even knowing this bit of info... I'm still bringing my baby into the ER if over 104 because you never want to be sorry!

I called my pedi this morning for a follow up visit (per ER instructions).  I didn't even see the frecken DR! I saw the nurse practicioner.  She was very sweet and thorough... but my son was just in the ER, I want to see his DR!  She gave a complete opposite diagnosis from Logan's pedi and the ER pedi and told me NOT to give Logan the antibiotics he was perscribed at the ER.  UGH... She said he didn't have bronchitis.  I called DH and DH talked reason into me.  He said "She isn't a DR. and we had a real DR who looked at chest X-rays last night confirm he has bronchitis... give him the antibiotics!"  I am so disappointed in Logan's Peditrician.  He is suppose to be one of the best in the area.  IDK.  All I care about now is for my baby bear to get better.  :(

Did Logan have a rotovirus shot?

Yea, Logan had the rotovirus vaccine (oral).  That's another reason the ER doc thought 'rotovirus' was a strange diagnosis by my pedi.

I'm glad Logan is feeling better!

And no, your ped is insane.  My mom ran into that problem with my brother at about 2 or 3.  He was sick a lot and they were used to seeing him all the tiem.  But for a few days he kept running a high fever over 104 and the ped just kept telling her she was overreacting and to just take him home and he'd be fine.  She got pissed and took him to the ER, where the on call doc told her if she hadn't brought him in, he would most likely have died.  His brain was swelling.  So I say always play it safe!!

Holy cow! You never know what could be wrong.  Mommy's HAVE to listen to instincts...that's why we have them!  Better safe than very very sorry.

  • I don't care what the pedi says, temp over 104 needs to be seen. I'm a nurse and am usually pretty relaxed about most fever/sickness stuff (I see REALLY sick people at work so when my daughter has a runny nose I don't typically freak out!), but that high can be pretty serious. Organs start to cook between 106-107 and 105 is just too close for my comfort. A virus also shouldn't cause a fever that high so I would still give him the antibiotics (if it were me). You did the right thing mama! Trust your gut! You know your baby best!

  • Hannah had a fever of 105 (rectally)  and the on call doctor just gave us instructions on increasing the dosage of advil and tylenol and alternating for frequently.  It did go down within an hour of a luke warm bath and advil, but it was scary.  I definitely would have taken her if it didn't go away within a few hours.  I also heard however, that 105 for babies is not rare.
