UPDATED : Foley bulb experience, come on in

So today was my 41 week appointment (I think I am 41, they thing 41w 2d). Really, really looking to avoid pitocin. Thankfully have a great midwife who I did not have to fight to let me go all the way to 42 weeks. At this point, I asked her to strip my membranes in order to hopefully send me over the edge. Worst case, I will check into to hospital next Monday night and start with a foley bulb in my cervix, and then pitocin if needed.

Words of wisdom? Any one experience this?

ETA: Looks like I won't need it - water just broke!

  • I wanted to go this route with my induction medically necessary, but after cervical ripening, I was still only a fingertip dilated so not enough to get a foley in place. I think you need to be at least 1 cm.

anyhow, we started pitocin at a the lowest dose and turned it off once I was in active labor after 2 jours so this is an option you could explore as well, I went med free and pitocin free until I was pushing and my contractions spaced out. At that point, I was happy to have pitocin again to get more opportunities to push :

  • I was induced with our first in this way and it worked PERFECTLY.  I had Cervadil at the same time as the Foley and I think it helped.

I also combined it with nipple stimulation - 20 minutes of a breast pump on each side per hour.  I added the nipple stimulation after about 10 hours of having the Foley in...I was still not in active labor at that point.  I only had to pump my breasts for 40 minutes at that point - and was in active labor instantly.  Literally, 7 hours after I put down the pump, I had a baby in my arms.  It was great!

Good luck to you!!  If it doesn't seem to work, don't be afraid to combine it with other things like pumping, castor oil, etc.
