High-Risk Pregnancy

Question re: previous preterm labor

Hi! I'm new to this board. I haven't bumped for ages and am on my phone, so I apologize in advance if I have any outdated tickers. I just found out I'm pregnant with my second. With my ds I went into preterm labor at 32 weeks and was hospitalized for a week on mag and then on bed rest until 36 weeks when I gave birth. Luckily he was born without any major complications. This time around I want to be as prepared as possible. What types of questions should I be asking my OB at my first appt? Are there any precautions I can take now? Should I possibly see a specialist or is that something I should ask at my first appt? Any insight or experience is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Question re: previous preterm labor

  • Given your history they will likely talk about p17 injections possibly bed rest. Many of us are on the p17 shots. They may also do more cervical length checks, depending on whether or not your cervix shortened or dilated early last time, or possibly just as a precaution.

All of this. I start p17 at 16 weeks along with cervical lengths. I have had a cervical length, but supposedly they're not accurate until 16 weeks. I also see a high-risk MFM doctor. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!!

Thank you for the info!  As far as I know my cervix length wasn't an issue.  I did dilate last time, but that is definitely something I think I should ask about. I will definitely ask about the shots also.  I am hoping to not be put on bed rest this time around; however, I understand the importance of it and will do anything to prevent what happenned last time.  I know I was lucky and want to be as careful as possible this time around.

Thank you for the well wishes.  Same to you!!  Looks like I have a lot of questions to ask my OB and lots of information to learn!

  • Hi,  I have a follow-up question.  I am in the same boat (preterm labor at 26, incomplete cervix, bedrest, delivered at 27 wks) and have my first prenatal apt next week.  My doctor told me last year after my post delivery follow-up that he'd want me on weekly 17-P shots and getting "regular" cervical checks (as well as possible bedrest) for any future pregnancies.  What exactly is regular? I guess I can wait until next week to ask him but if people can share their experience I'd appreciate.

    Mom to three beautiful preemies:

Lily born at 27 wks: 2 lbs 4 oz.
Max born at 27 wks: 2 lbs 2 oz.
Glenn born at 31 wks: 3 lbs 9 oz.

I get checked weekly. I think some other ladies are every other week. I'd be way too nervous to go any longer than 2 weeks between checks. Even getting checked weekly they still barely caught mine in time to do a rescue cerclage. A lot can change quickly.
