DH just informed me...

I was on Skype with DH earlier, and he informed me that he has been on the paleo diet this deployment.  He has lost a bunch of weight and feels great (he has also been working out three times as much as he does at home, but he credits the diet), so he plans to stay on it when he gets back.  My first response was, great, so you'll be cooking meals when you get back?  Seriously, I'll eat twigs if he does the work to make the even remotely edible.

So now, I'm afraid of him coming home and getting all judgy on me when I feed R Mac&cheese or have a slice of toast with my eggs in the morning, or milk & sugar in my coffee.  Ugh, as if I didn't have enough to worry about him coming home and fitting into the routine that R and I have established, now I'm worried about our eating habits-awesome!

  • I don't know, I've been toying with the idea of going paleo since I've basically cut out carbs already. It might be worth a try? People I know who do eat paleo love how they feel and say after the first few weeks, it's not difficult to maintain. This is a link I bookmarked:

It's commonly called The Caveman Diet.  I don't know much about it, but am looking forward to checking out the link HA posted.  Basically you can only eat what would have been available to cavemen-meat, veggies, nuts.  No processed sugars, no grains.  It just seems like such a fad diet to me.  (ok, running off to check out that link...)

  • It seems like a fad diet to me too, but every body responds differently to different types of diets. I'm all about cutting processed foods as much as possible, but sometimes I just need a bagel or some mashed potatoes. Ok, this is really about ice cream. I could never give up ice cream.

Is it wrong that I'm most concerned about my wine?  I enjoy some carbs from time to time, but not often really.  I wouldn't really mind having to give them up, but wine?  beer?  chocolate?  I do not live by the motto "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."  Lindt chocolates and a good red wine taste WAY better than skinny feels...

Sounds like some villages would be burned down if this would go down in my home.

  • I agree, I don't think that it is too much of a fad diet.  My Endocrinologist recommended it as a means to put my hypothyroid condition into remission.  I bought and read the book and decided 'no way in hell!'.

  • My husband did paleo for a year-plus up until G was born. Lost 20 pounds, easy. I will say, it took him a ton of time chopping veggies and other food prep (which is why he's no longer on paleo, because things just got crazy with a newborn). I ate a lot of what he cooked, and most of it tasted fine. A lot of meat, a lot of veggies. I don't do fish or seafood, so I ate the crap I wanted to eat on fish nights. Plus, say he made shredded pork or something - I still used a tortilla or bun and cheese. It worked for us, he looked great, etc. He always looked at it as more of a lifestyle change than a "diet".
  • I have a handful of friends that are on Paleo. They started cutting items out slowly instead of going cold turkey. They all lost weight, some got off medications, and they all say they have tons of energy and feel amazing!

  • 2x a year, MH does this "cleanse" thing where he gets on diet similar to paleo.  The last time he did it, he felt terrific and had energy.  Even became a bit more interested in sex (we're almost 40 and with a newborn, it was tough).

I don't think I could do it forever but the concept is smart.  I'm a believer in everything in moderation.  Unfortunately, I'm not a very good practitioner of my belief.

  • I actually am starting to convert myself to Paleo this week as part of my Hell-vember program.  I too thought it was just another fad until I started doing some research and discovered that it's mostly about eating whole, non-processed meat and veggies and not eating most grains and legumes.  Most of the websites that I have read about it suggest an 80/20 approach where you have one cheat day a week and indulge in things that you love.  We'll see how it goes for me.
