Baby Names

Camila

I was looking at the 2011 SSA list and I noticed this spelling is 48, slightly lower on the charts than Claire, Sophie and Harper. The spelling Camilla is 458.

I was always under the impression Camilla was the more common/proper spelling, but I guess not? Do you guys know any Camilas? I wonder if there's a specific demographic naming all these Camilas. I'm not considering this name btw.

Sorry about formatting, on my iPhone.

  • That's surprising to me too.  The only Camilla I "know" is the one married to Prince Charles.
  • My guess would be that it is popular with Spanish speakers, the double L makes a Y sound in Spanish, hence the spellings Isabel and Gabriela.

Ditto this. According to Behindthename.com, Camila is the Spanish and Portuguese spelling of the name Camilla. There is a Mexican rock band called Camila so I have a feeling this has something to do with it's rise in popularity.

I've loved the name Camila ever since I heard it years ago, but it doesn't not go well with our LN :(

This.  Two different pronunciations.  I like them both, though.
