Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DD is Sick, high fever of 103...advice please

DD started with a 102.7 fever at 3 am yesterday.  We took her to the doctor and the doctor said she didnt see anything in her ears or throat...so she said its probably a viral infection and to come back if the fever persists like this for 4 days. She also said the baby sounded a little "congested" when she listened to her which I do not hear/see.
She doesnt have any other symptoms to me other than a high fever, loss of apetite and crankiness. Her fever goes down a little during the day but at night it shoots back up to 103-ish.  I am just really concerned and dont know what it could be. I have given her motrin at 103.1 because i feel the fever is too high.

Did any of you have this experience with high fever? what did it turn out to be? was it nothing ? how long did it take to go away?

  • Are you alternating motrin & tylenol every few hours?

I'd call the doctor ASAP and see what they say. 103 is really high- too high! I hope she feels better soon.

  • alternate between tylenol and motrin...tylenol now, motrin in 3 hours, tylenol in 6 hours etc.  taking your baby to the MD without managing with fever reducers is silly.  It is like going to the doc for a headache but you never tried to take any pain meds.  If the fever stays 103 despite fever reducers every 3 hours then go back to the doc.

  • Scary as it seems, 103 is just a moderate fever.  I know it doesn't seem that way when it's your baby, though :)  Definitely take the PPs' advice and alternate Motrin and Tylenol.  It allows you to give one or the other every few hours, vs having to wait the 4 or 6 between doses of the same med.

  • I've been giving her Motrin every 6 hours. Its just so scary because it went to 101 in the morning and now its almost 104. It just is very frightening and i wish I knew what it was, infection, virus? how long will this last shes just so hot and miserable :(
  • First, call your pedi to verify it's okay to alternate tylenol and motrin. Then double check the dosage and the times. You can also use tempid (aka room temp) washcloths on her arms, legs, belly, underarms, neck, head, etc. Keep them moist and rotate them around until her fever breaks. My DS's both had roseola at this age. High fevers with no other symptoms, then on day 4 a rash appeared all over their bodies. Keep fluids in her. Don't let the number so much scare you, as my pedi always says it's how they are acting. If they're lethargic, etc, then you need to get her seen.

  • The high fever isn't as concerning as your baby's mood. If your baby is acting weird or extra out of sorts then worry. Tylenol and Morton ad different meds and they can be given together/overlapping. A warm bath is also helpful.

  • My LO had a fever of 103.8 about a month ago.  We took him to the ER because it shot up that high late at night with a cough.  Tylenol didn't bring it down but Mortrin did.  They said it was viral and even did a chest x-ray and that was clear.  Sent us home to keep giving Tylenol for the fever but to call back if he's not eating, wetting enough diapers, etc.  He was fine except for the fever.  It went away in 2 days.  Afterwards though he had a persistent cough for about 2 weeks.  We took him back in to the doctor and he had bronchitis at that point.  An antibiotic cleared it right up.  We also ran a humidifier is his room which seemed to help.

  • If there's no other real symptoms other than the fever, it sounds like roseola. It really sucks because you don't know until day 3-4 when the rash shows up that's what it is. All you can do is give Tylenol for the fever and wait it out.
