juice

Are there any types of juice to avoid with LOs?  Up until now we've only done apple since DS still dribbles half of it out and I don't want to stain the carpet :)  But we are a cranberry family...cran apple, cran grape, cran raspberry, etc...is there anything that's too harsh for their bellies?

Re: juice

  • I'd think as long it's watered down, it'd be okay... I gave DS orange mango peach, a few days ago watered down and it loooved it.

  • I think around 1 it's fine to give whatever you want. BUT, we avoid juice - it has a lot of sugar in it (about the same as soda) and really very little nutritional value. Since their stomachs are so small at this age, I don't want my daughter to fill up on juice so she doesn't get calories that have valuable nutrition. Real fruit is way better and then you can save juice as a treat once in a while.

There was a big study not that long ago about the link between childhood juice drinkers and obesity.

This. But if you were to give juice, I would avoid anything acidic, like orange.

  • DD gets whole fruits and water.  Only juice I've ever given her is stuff that I make for myself (usually green juice) a bit watered down.  FIL would LOVE to load her up all day on sippy cups of juice but I refuse to allow that habit to form!
  • We also do not give juice. I still water it down for my older kids. I have had to give prune juice watered down for constipation in the past, but that's about it.

  • A couple of times a week we do give juice but now that we are starting the WCM it's been replaced with that. When I say juice though I really mean 90% water 10% sugar free apple juice and a max of 3 ounces in a 24 hour period. I haven't tried anything else but I would imagine orange juice might be a little too harsh on LO's tummy.

  • If you can find a 100% juice cranberry, then it would be fine to give. The problem is that most cranberry juice has sugar added because it is such a tart and slightly bitter fruit that most people can't drink the juice straight. Most pure juice cranberry is made just for cooking purposes. My little guy has problems with constipation even with a high fiber diet (he gets fresh whole fruits every day and barley oatmeal). Our doctor put him on 4 ounces of pure juice a day and that's cleared it right up. He's equal in his height to weight chart as well so no problems there.
  • I don't think that at this age there any really no no juices as long as you are following basic guildelines (100% juice, watered down, and given sparingly), that said,I would not give 100% pure cranberry juice to my worst enemy, let alone my baby.  And as said above babies don't need juice, it's not a health food and if over done, can be bad for them.

Sweet juices like apple may not have sugar added to it, but they are still high in natural sugar, and sugar is sugar so unless you are treating a health problem I would steer clear. Despite the above stated anecdotal evidence to the contrary, there is pretty sound research that says that high simple sugar consumption increases risk of diabetes, obesity etc.

There are also some juices that have artifical sweeteners in them like the low cal or sugar free Cranberry juice, but I would not feed those to a baby.

If you really want to give juice consider carrot or a vegetable/fruit blend  (watered down of course)  so that you are still getting some flavor without it being so sweet.   Some babies are more sensitive than others to acid, but you'll never know until you try.  And if the juice is watered down, i don't think it matters as much.
