Pregnant after 35

37 and this is my first!

I'm 7 weeks now and super excited, but keep reading about "advanced maternal age" complications, genetic disorders and so forth.  I'm trying to keep the negative energy out of my head, but its difficult.  My husband and I are healthy and my mom had my sister when she was 37 and me when she was 39, and both of us are fairly normal...haaaahahh.  Kidding aside, I just want a healthy baby-  I have a genetic counselor appointment on Nov 9th so I hope my bloodwork from that will be normal and everything will be ok.

Re: 37 and this is my first!

  • You are not alone, I am 37 as well and pregnant with my first. The first few weeks I was so dazed and confused, now at week 12, I feel a lot better, but deep down wish I was 10 years younger!! But what can I do.

  • I had my first at 37 and now expecting my 2nd - will be 40 before I give birth.  I did all the tests to be safe but other than that, I think my pregnancy was pretty average/normal.  Happy and healthy 9 months!

  • Congrats!  Don't worry too much about the ama thing.  You have a slightly increased risk but its not like a switch turns at 35.  My doctor hasn't really even mentioned ama being a factor for anything and my tests are all good.  Good luck to you!
TTC since Dec. 2010. Me: 37, DH: 38...unexplained RPL
    BFP #1 - missed m/c 4.18.11 found @8w3d, d&c @13w
BFP #2 blighted ovum found 8.2011 @8w, misoprostol
    BFP#3 - missed m/c 6.11.12 @ 9w3d, d&c revealed extra chromosome 15
    BFP#4 8.10.12, DD born 4/26/13
  • I am in the same boat, except I am a little older.  I just turned 40 and pregnant with my first too. I can't help but be worried about chromosomal issues but all I can do is hope and pray for the best.  I just started week 5 and had my first ultrasound today; I have another one scheduled on November 9.  At least everything looks good so far.  I hope my OB will address genetic counseling, blood work, etc at my next appointment.
    Me, 41; DH 38; TTC since July 2012, 1st round of Clomid, BFP on 10/19, what an incredible blessing!  M/c on 7w3d; D&C on 11/30; 4th round of Clomid 100mg = BFP on 04/19!!! M/c #2 at 7w; D&C on 5/30, then repeat D&C on 7/1.  Saline u/s on 8/2, uterus looks great!  Will start TTC in 09/13 w/ Clomid 100mg. Surprise natural BFP on 8/25!!! Beta #1=95, #2=182, #3=404!  EDD 5/4/13...Grow baby grow!

  • I'll be 38 on November 3rd and this is my first! It's easy to get caught up in all the genetic abnormality hype, but after speaking with my genetic counselor-- there's still a less than 1% chance that my baby will have any genetic abnormality. And I'm older than you! Wink

Congratulations! Hang in there and try to enjoy the ride!

Was put on med for lot thyroid hormone production last week...am hoping not to hear from the doctor's office this week.

  • This will be my second child I am also 37, 38 when this LO arrives.  It is hard to stay positive when there is so much negative talk related to AMA.  My grandmother had my mom at 40 and my uncle at 43 and that was in the late 1940's so that gives me hope.

Welcome and I hope you have a H&H 9 months!!

  • Thanks so much-  I feel better reading all of the posts that people are sending my way-  It's nice to talk about this with others.  Congrats to you as well!

  • I am 39 and 29 weeks pregnant. This pregnancy has actually been a lot easier then the one I experienced when I was 23/24 and so far we haven't had anything indicating any genetic issues.

     Good luck and Congrats!!!!

  • I'm 36, but will be 37 when I deliver. I think it all depends on the individual. I'm concerned as well.

Me too!  I can totally relate to this post.  It is really scary.  But it's also so hard to predict.  My cousing had 2 healthy babies at 41 and 43 and one of my closest friends had to terminate for trisomy and she was only 30.  It's a crap shoot.  Hang in there...and know that you are not alone!
