question for stm's

I am beyond upset that my wedding and engagement ring no longer fit. I was looking at my fingers today and didn't think they looked too swollen so I tried to put my rings back on for a little bit just so I could remember what it looked like lol. Well...I got them on, and now I'm soaking my hand in cold water, ice packs, dish soap, and having trouble getting them off! I'll get them eventually I guess. I just want to know if I will be able to wear them again after I deliver? I will be so devastated if I can't wear them anymore. Please tell me your fingers shrunk back to prepregnancy size!!!

Re: question for stm's

  • Yes, they should fit again. However, don't try to rush it. Let your hands "drain" from all the fluid (they will get even bigger when you deliver b/c of all the fluids from the IVs).  Give it 2-3 weeks (maybe more if you gained a lot of weight) and then try again.

  • I agree with others - it shouldn't be a problem, but it will probably take a few days at least, possibly even a few weeks.  I never had a problem with my previous pregnancy, but this time I'm noticing my engagement ring isn't comfy any more.  I think today may have been the last day I wear both rings for a while :(

  • Yes, they will fit again.  I mean, if you have gained a TON of weight, it may take a bit longer, but I was able to put mine back on shortly after DS was born.

  • I never had swelling in my hands from pregnancy, but I do know that people's hands do lose the swollen-ness pretty soon afterwards.  :)

  • glad 2 hear that!!! BF bought me a ring but with all the wait i gained it isnt fittin anymore.
  • Mine did fit again after DD1 was born.  I don't remember how long it took exactly but I know I wore them to work when I went back at 8 weeks pp.

My fingers don't even look swollen this time and they got too tight just a couple of weeks ago.  It happens!

  • Another one who agrees. My e-ring doesn't fit, but my wedding band still does. It took me a good month and a half for my e-ring to fit post-partum w/both girls.

  • I had a lot of swelling last time and took them off about at 8 months. I think it took like 6 weeks after delivery for them to feel normal again. But yes they went back on.

  • Hmmm Looks like I'm in the minority here.  I wasn't able to wear mine until DS was ~7 months old (you know right about when I got pregnant with DD).
I lost all but 5 lbs of my 'baby weight' with DS by 6 weeks PP.  And I was 5 lbs under pre-pregnancy weight with DS before they would fit.  I was getting ready to take them to the jeweler to have them resized when they started fitting again.  I took them off early on in this pregnancy because I was swelling early.  I'm sure they would fit now, but I doubt they would fit for long.  I've already been without them for over a year Sad

  • Thanks  for all the replies! Makes me feel much better knowing I should be able to wear them again.

Update: I got the engagement ring off, wedding band is being a little more stubborn. My finger only swells bad when I try and take it off and then shrinks back down to almost normal size again. I think I might just try and leave it on and see what my doctor thinks. So far it doesn't hurt and isn't cutting off the circulation at all. Unless anybody has suggestions for getting it off? I've tried almost everything though.

  • Uh, yes.  I was out of my rings for a bit with my first son, but definitely back in them within a few weeks (maybe months, but probably not) after his birth.  And this time around, I only just had to take them off at 35 weeks.  Not a big deal.

  • BTW, even if you have no IV, and no fluids pumped through you during birth, swelling can be worse postpartum than during pregnancy.  My son was born in late August, 100+ degree weather, and I had no IV for his delivery.  My worst swelling day of all (pregnancy + postpartum) was 4 days postpartum.  So just be prepared for that!!

  • I don't mean to be harsh, but why in the world did you force them back on? I had to have my rings CUT off, and so now I have to wait until after the baby is born and all of the swelling goes down in order to even get them fixed.

You can get rings resized, y'know. Talk to the jeweler where they were purchased, or find a place near you that you feel you can trust and ask for a quote on sizing them. I promise, it's not that big of a deal. For me, it'll be $30 per ring per size, for materials, to make it bigger. Depends on what material it's made from.

Try again tomorrow. Let the finger rest; it's probably making it swell more, even if you can't tell.

Tomorrow, hold your hand above your head for at least 10 minutes, preferably in a bag/bowl of cold water/ice. See if that works. I would NOT leave a ring on, because they do start to cut off circulation eventually.

  • I had to take mine off around this time with my first pregnancy. They fit back on within a couple of weeks. I actually ended up getting my wedding band sized down when my son was 3 months.

Try submerging your hand in cold, soapy water (drain closed) and then twisting it off.

This pregnancy I just took my rings off and am wearing my wedding band on a chain around my neck. Makes me feel a little better.

  • yes- they went back down, i had no trouble getting my rings on again. i don't remember how long after delivery it was, though.

i know, i remember putting my engagement ring on again and thinking, "wow, pretty!" because i hadn't seen it for so long.

  • If your ring still hasn't come off today, try using Windex. I used to work at a jewelry store and windex worked wonders at getting rings off. As long as you don't have a very precious stone in your band, (opal, pearl) you can use it. And it'll do double duty and clean the ring. :)

FWIW, with DD, I had to take my rings off around month 6. I bought a fake band to wear though, the next size up. They went back to regular size by my 6 week visit after having DD. Miraculously, this time, I've been able to wear my rings the entire time so far. Occasionally, I'll have a day where I can't wear them, but it's very rare.

I didn't have to force them back on at all. My fingers weren't swollen and it went on just like it used to. I took them off in the first place just to be safe because I've heard stories of rings needing to be cut off. After a couple of hours of having them on I noticed my finger started to swell so I tried taking it off and it was hard to get the engagement ring off and that made my finger swell even more.

  • DD1 I gained nearly 50 lbs, ugh! My rings didn't fit from 8 months - to 6 weeks ppd.   DH bought me a cheap-y fake ring because I was so gosh darn sensitive.

DD2 I've gained 25 to-date.. (maybe I can stay at this weight for the next few weeks.  Anyway, my rings still fit.

So for me it was mostly in regards to weight gain (in my very non-official non-medical) opinion.     DD1 once the weight started coming off and the swelling went down my rings fit just fine.

    Hopefully they'll fit soon!
