Toddlers: 24 Months+

Would you call the pedi?

My daughter had a fever on and off (as high as 102.6) for a couple of days. I called the doctor on the second day and they said to call back for an appt if it lasts for three days. Well, it gradually tapered off and went back to normal around day 3. She never has had any other typical symptoms, no rash, congestion, coughing, etc.

But she is not herself. She isn't eating much, but is drinking fine. She has decent energy, but is always a firecracker. She is just constantly whining and crying. She wakes up 10+ times a night, crying and calling for us. She acts tired and grumpy all day--if we go somewhere, she will whine at the slightest thing and asks to go home the whole time, clinging to me the whole outing. I've asked her what hurts, if she feels sick, what's wrong, etc., but she's only 27 months and answers are all over the map ("Elmo feels sick, too" ha).

I don't want to be that annoying mom at the doctor with a healthy kid who is just acting two. Of course, she's always had tantrums and been whiny at times, but this just seems off. Would you take her in?

Re: Would you call the pedi?

  • If your gut says take her, then take her. Earlier this summer, LO and I had strep throat. Our fevers lasted a day and then they were gone. I knew my throat was hurting but until I got sick, I had no idea that his hurt.

That said, are you sure she's not getting her molars? She could be grumpy from not sleeping and she may not be sleeping because her teeth hurt.

  • I would- I really try to be careful to not call the pedi for every little thing, but when DS isn't acting himself, it often turns out he has an ear infection- last time it was strep.

No, I'm not sure. I don't really know how to tell, as I've thought they were about to come through for months, literally. I've asked if her teeth/mouth hurt, and she just says, "No, mama." I've showed her the tube of Orajel and asked if she needed any, and she says no. We used that a bit last time she was teething really bad and she would ask for it, so I'm assuming if it was molars, she'd react somehow to that.

I hate going into the doctor though (paying copay, etc) if it is just molars though. grr

  • And of course the one day I want a pedi appointment, they still have the out-of-office message on even though they've been open for an hour and a half. FML.
  • It could be teething--my LO acts so weird when she's teething.  She's cutting her second year molars now, and she has been the whinest kid ever, which is very much unlike her.  My adivce would be to give her a dose of Children's Advil and see if it helps.  It really helps my daughter sleep better.

  • Sound like an ear infection to me. Waking 10+ times per night is excessive for teething IMO if you are giving Motrin or something. (Not sure if you are or not)

  • Another vote for ear infection. When my DD quits sleeping, it's almost always an ear infection.
