We went in for an u/s thinking I was around 7 wks. No baby, no heart beat. The doctor said based on my last period I should be 8 wks, but I had very irregular cycles (34, 49,32 day cycles) so I could be a few wks behind on the calculations. I got blood tests for HCG and I'll know Monday and I go back in a week for another u/s, but she said it did not look good. She said it could possibly be a blighted ovum. I'm so heart broken. Is it even worth keeping hope for this next u/s? Is it possible to not see a baby at 7 wks? I got a pos pregnancy test 3 1/2 wks ago so I'm guessing I would have to be at least 6-7 wks along. I'm confused and worried. Any advice or comments from anyone who has been thru this? Thanks again for all the support and feedback.
Re: no baby or heartbeat at 6-7 wks? miscarriage?
Not to give you false hope.. because you should know every situation is different..
A family friend found out she was pregnant around 6-7 weeks, went in for an u/s and the doctor said there was no heartbeat, it was just a sac. A week later they went for a follow up u/s and there was a heartbeat. I was skeptical and didn't believe she was pregnant, but now she's 20 weeks along so, you never know.
Oddly enough, our Dr.'s equipment was so old (and I'm not even kidding) the machine was yellow the plastic was so old, it was the size of an old shoe box and was covered in dust! She did an u/s on my stomach because she said it was "too blurry to see anything" with the vaginal u/s. I thought that was strange because I thought early on the vaginal u/s shows more than the stomach u/s.
I'm going to keep a glimmer of hope, but I agree with you the timing almost doesn't work out. I guess I'll know more on Tuesday when my 2 days of blood work comes back. I guess if my hcg levels are going down I know what to expect, but if they are doubling then there might be a chance?
That does make a difference. You wouldn't be able to see detail like a fetal pole without a t/v ultrasound. Right now the baby is the size of a grain of rice.
Did she see ANYTHING in your uterus? A sac? If not, did she talk to you about ectopic and what to look for?

No more TTC for us. We are done, and at peace, as a family of 4.
"Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape.” — Charles Dickens
I went for an US at my 8 week appointment and found 1 baby 1 heart beat and it measured 6w1d. Surprisingly we also saw an empty sac which my doc said was a "failed twin" and asked me to come back in a week to check on the baby. A week later, we saw the baby measuring at 7w2d and a twin measuring at 7w3d - both with heart beats.
My point is that at early term US are crazy - even when done vaginally and much worse when done externally. At 6 weeks the heart is just starting to beat and the baby is the size of a grain of rice. My doc was using state of the art equipment and it was an internal scan and we still saw nothing - no pole, no yolk, no anything - in the second sac. Truthfully, there is a story just like yours (including my own) on every page of the 1st Trimester board and they do go in a positive direction when you could be off a day or three with implantation - or in my case, 2 weeks.
I'd start worrying if, on an internal scan, the sac gets smaller or if you were unable to see a sac at all. She should recommend you out to have an internal scan done elsewhere as blood work won't tell you anything if it's a missed miscarriage.
The Dr said she saw a sac that looked good (had rings around the top which meant healthy implantation) and saw the start of a yolk sac. That's it but it was small and blurry and she never had the equipment to zoom in so we could not see much at all.
Thank you all for the words of encouragement. I'm going into this next week positive - either something was wrong with this pregnancy and it wasnt meant to be or we will see a tiny miracle this Friday. Either way, we have a healthy 19 month old at home who makes this all so much easier. Just sooo incredibly thankful for the healthy girl I have now...
Ill keep you all posted. Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.
You are way too early for her to be doing an abdominal u/s. If you were to get bad news next week, I would insist on getting another opinion from newer equipment with a vaginal u/s. Best of luck to you!
I'm not trying to give you false hope but for your own piece of mind, take the time to make sure you are super sure it is a BO before you make any decisions. When we thought I had one, we found a million stories about babies who show up at 8 weeks and 9 weeks who just weren't visible - even on t/v scans. Only patience and time will make it abundantly clear in one direction or the other. Best of luck to you! T&Ps
This is my very first post.... ever on this website.
I'm 12 weeks pregnant, today.
My first u/s was when I was 10 weeks pregnant, the heartbeat was 174bpm but I was not alowed to hear it, fearing since it's so early it might bug baby, but then I had another last week and it was 171bpm so I mean I have heard people doing it as early as 7 weeks but I was also told by my OB to wait because baby is so little that it might not pick it up, so give it time. I'll pray for you
