How much?

I have been BF baby and pumping. Today however either baby is extra hungry or my supply is not as abundant and I gave him his first bottle. So two questions how much should he be eating from a bottle in one sitting? And any suggestions on being able to keep my supply up to his demand? TIA

Re: How much?

  • In the BFing booklet that my hospital gave me, it says 1 oz for every 2.5lbs. it could vary though. DD1 took 1.5 to 3 oz up until she was 6 months old regardless of ER weight. I would try 2 oz and if your LO is still hungry make another oz.

  • Usually it's between 2 and 3.5 oz. I haven't weighed my LO since his 3 day appointment which he was 8lb12oz but I'm guessing he is mid to upper 9lbs now at 3w old.

  • How old is your LO? It may just be a growth spurt. As a FTM with DS1, I thought I had low supply right off the bat, but it was just that he was going through a growth spurt and wanted to eat ALL the time. I didn't think he was getting enough from me, so I gave him a bottle of formula, which hurt my supply. My suggestion would be to not give a bottle. Let LO BF as much as he wants. I would also get into a LC, or get a scale so you can do a weighed feeding and see how much LO is really getting.

If you do have liw supply, eat oatmeal, drink plenty of water, make sure you are eating enough. You can take Fenugreek and drink Mother's milk tea. Good luck!

    Ditto all of this.
