Pregnant after 35

Intro & Question!

Hi All,

I just got my BFP for our 2nd child. DS is 17 months old. I will be 37 at the time of delivery. My first pregnancy was a wild ride until the end, so I'm definitely anxious about this one, but also extremely excited.

After DS was born I was diagnosed with spastic bladder (never had a problem prior to his birth) and put on oxybutynin. I will need surgery to correct the problem, but decided to wait until I was done having children.

My question is this: Has anyone else taken this medication during pregnancy? It's listed as a Class B drug, but I get a little freaked out when I see things like "this should only be taken if benefits outweigh the risk." I'm happy to stop taking it, even it means a LONG 9 months of urgency issues and Poise pad wearing. But as a teacher, I'm panicked that I'll be standing in front of a class peeing my pants and trying to pretend like I'm not. ;)

Any info on personal experience would be appreciated. Looking forward to getting to know you ladies!

Re: Intro & Question!

  • Hi and welcome! Congrats on your BFP! I have no specific advice about oxybutynin, but I will mention that Tylenol, the go-to pain reliever for pregnant women, is also a Class B drug. I find that pretty comforting.

If I were in your shoes, I would try to learn more about oxybutynin's mechanism of action. How does it work? If its mechanism of action does things that would be bad for a pregnant woman's body (such as, I don't know, making you not feel thirsty so you don't drink very much and could easily become dehydrated), then maybe I would try and cut back or stop. Your doctor should be able to explain how the drug works and help you make a decision about whether to continue taking it.

  • Talk to your pharmacist.  They have a much larger knowledge base than physicians when it comes to medications.  They may even be able to suggest other medications that are newer.  Oxybutynin is an old school med :)

  • That Tylenol example makes me feel MUCH better. I don't know why I never thought to ask a pharmacist. I'm so used to sitting on hold waiting to speak to a doctor.

Excellent advice ladies. Thanks so much!
