Babies: 9 - 12 Months

after formula?

DD will be one this month what do I feed her when she can't have formula anymore? Baby food does not do anything for her. I don't want to feed her what I eat because my food is not healthy. Im puerto rican so we eat fried greasy food everyday. I don't eat and veggies and I rarely eat fruits. So I kind of need to have her own little menu. If you have more than one LO what do you feed them? What will your LO eat? TIA

  • We feed our kids what we eat usually, but at that age you can do pretty much anything. Pasta, mashed potatoes, tender pieces of chicken/ham, soft veggies, pieces of cheese, etc.

    Just use your best judgement.

  • Also, she still can have formula to fill in the nutritional gaps if you are really worried.  It's not like formula over one will harm them.  Whole milk and a vitamin supplement will also work.  DD hasn't been on pureed food in months, and she just eats whatever we do and make sure she gets a fruit and veggie with every meal.

  • Pieces of fruits and veggies, string cheese, any leftover chicken or noodles, toast...I will give him crackers but I keep a close eye on him when I do.

    Really, you might want to consider adjusting your diet, not creating one for your child.  Making a separate meal for your child every time you eat is going to be a complete PITA.  How long are you going to do that?  At what point is it "ok" for a person to eat greasy food on a regular basis? You don't have to give up what you love, just eat it in moderation and add in a LOT of fruits and veggies to your diet.  You're the example, and a lot of kids want to eat what their parents eat!

    There are a few examples on my blog of good finger foods for babies. 

    Whatever you feed LO, just make sure it's a balanced meal. Cheese, toast and cut up tomatoes are popular with DS right now.

  • I would also second the recommendation that you think about overhauling the whole family's diet rather than creating a special menu for your child.  Kids learn from their parents.  I'm not familiar with a puerto rican diet specifically, but from what I've experienced abroad, most cultures can create a well balanced meal.

    We eat a lot of mexican food, but it's not Taco Bell type food.  For example, we prepare fresh guacamole (DD gets avocado slices or uses the guac as a dipper), chicken tostadas with lots of tomatoes, beans and corn, and mangos for dessert.

    Last night we had fried fish, mixed veggies and whole grain pasta with spinach.  DD had all of that, but her's was particularly heavy on veggies and light on the fried fish.

  • Thanks to you all. I will keep using the blog too. The big issue really is that her dad thinks that she can't eat anything but fruits and veggies. He says she's going to get fat eating table foods and how girls grow different than boys and we gain weight faster than boys. I've tried telling him that she's got to eat real food. He didn't even want her to start eating baby food until he heard the doctor say she can. I don't know what his problem is.

    Someone said they didn't know what puerto ricans eat, we eat rice, beans and some type of fried meat everyday. No veggies or fruits or dessert. Sometimes there's this type of soup that contains rice, veggies, chicken, and whatever else my grandma puts in it(I don't know how to make it lol) As for my diet I'm just used to eating what I eat because that's what has been cooked all my life. Thanks for the help though. I'm just hoping her doctor tells us she needs to eat more than just fruits and veggies. He dad listens to what the doctor says.

  • Well, they don't NEED to eat more than fruits and veggies, although some babies like it and can handle it.  DD is being raised mostly vegetarian bc that's how I eat.  DH is a hardcore meateater but understand that he is very unhealthy and I'm slowly integrating more veggies into meals with smaller meat portions for him.  It's all in the poop - DD has good poop on a diet of breastfeeding 4-5x a day, veggies, fruits, healthy grains (quinoa, amaranth, brown rice - minimal wheat grains and no oats as she's showing an allergy to those), and she LOVES beans.  That pretty much covers the bases for nutrition right there.  Absolutely no sugar or processed refined carbs, and the main reason for limited meat (she does have eggs) is bc her poop becomes explosive and stinky - a sign that her body isn't digesting properly and is rejecting the food.  Everyone in my family wanted to push me into feeding solids, even the pedi told me at 4mos to go ahead, but I respectfully declined knowing that a) my child wasn't ready, and b) it wasn't right for her body.  I exclusively breastfed for 6mos, she still nurses now and will continue until she chooses to wean (regardless of how 'gross' or 'weird' my bottle feeding friends think that it), and she didn't like purees so didn't really start solids until she was 8mos and was able to self feed.  There is no right time!  Listen to your baby.  And I agree - change your diet now before she realizes what you are eating.  Any insecurities you have about food or your body?  You can bet your LO will feel the same way some day so let her see you eating heatlhy and being happy and she will gladly follow.

     Picky eaters are NOT born - they are created!

    I have to disagree with the last line. I've fed both my kids the exact same way...mostly BLW with a little pureed food in there, whole grains, loads of fruits and veggies, healthy proteins, rarely anything processed...my 3 yo son eats like a high school boy and has never met a food he refused. My DD is 11 months and is quite picky. They get fed the same thing and she spits half of it out. I am not going to change what I serve for meals and I won't make her something separate, but she eats way less than he does because of her preference and I have to make sure I am serving at least one thing I know she wont refuse...like yogurt.
