NBR-Insurance

I'm going to need to find my own insurance soon, so I'm starting to look around.

Who do you have your auto insurance with and why?

If you bought your own health insurance, who do you have?  Any pointers on finding the best kind?  Hopefully I'll find a job with benefits soon and won't have to worry about it much!

Re: NBR-Insurance

  • We have American Family. Because that's what my dad had when I was a new driver. Then just put the billing for myself in my name. Got married and added DH. I never really "shopped" around.

Health care- I have no idea. I just assumed Cobra was what you did if you didn't have it through an employer.

What kind of job are you looking for?

  • We have Allstate, because well, my husband has always used them and I got added to his stuff when we moved in together.  We also bundle with our homeowners, and since we are in the process of buying and selling a house we did just shop around a little, they had the best price of the major companies.  We've totaled two cars and had a new roof put on our house, they've always been easy to deal with.

Can't really speak for the health insurance, I've been insured through my work for the last 8 years, now I'm on MHs.  My dad used to buy our own when we were kids and I know it was Blue Cross Blue Shield, but a lot has changed since then.

Shopping for insurance is no fun.  Good luck!

  • I have Allstate for my auto insurance. They weren't the cheapest for just auto, but along with my home insurance policy they were. You can get quotes online, so I would shop around.

For health insurance, I've always been on my work's policy, but I have shopped around since I'm young and healthy and don't get much of a discount by sticking with the group. I've used https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ to shop around. Assuming you don't have any pre-existing conditions, you do not want to go on Cobra, it will be cheaper to just buy insurance.

Health insurance will vary by location, so it may be something to ask a local board.

  • For car insurance I have had Liberty Mutual, Allstate, and Travelers. I really liked all of them. Just kept switching to get a better price each time I moved.
I found Geico to be super expensive. They wanted what I was paying for 1 year for 6 month coverage.

I currently have USAA for car insurance now.

Sorry I can't help on health insurance.

  • I have nationwide on the car I drive, it's on my parents plan still.

We have progressive on the new car and old truck. We will most likely switch to nationwide soon.

Health insurance is through H, we had UHC, but they were jerks about adding me, so we decided to switch to BCBS.

  • I have State Farm for auto. Its what my mom had and the agent was really cool, he gave me and my H lots of extra discounts. I've never shopped for insurance.

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield for health, its through my H's work. It seems ok....but I do not understand health insurance AT ALL.

  • Thanks ladies!  Unfortunately, my ex usually took care of all the insurance stuff...

I don't think I can do Cobra now because it's been about six months since I left my job with benefits.  And it's too expensive anyway.  My only pre-existing condition is fertility related, so hopefully that won't be a ding against me!

I'm an xray tech and am working part time, but the area I live in is flooded with techs looking for jobs and it's really hard to find one.  I'm sortta wishing I hadn't given up my full-time position when I came back from maternity leave.  But I didn't think I would be where I am now...

  • I work In the health insurance industry.  I grew up on Sate Farm and moved to American National when I got married.  We will be moving back to State Farm soon as they have all of DH business insurance.  For health insurance don't just look at the monthly premium look at how much you will pay out of pocket and how easy the company is to deal with.  Shop around.  The infertility will depend on how long ago it was and obviously if you are no longer seeking treatment it shouldn't impact you to much.  Good luck!

we also have USAA for our auto, life and homeowners insurance. Unfortunately they are not an option for many, but they are fantastic.

Health insurance we have BCBS but again, it's through an employer so I'm not much help...

  • We have USAA for auto (and home, life and pretty much everything they offer). We love, love, love them, but you have to be military or a military dependent to get it.

For health, I've always had it through my employer, so I don't have much advice, but if you can find a local broker to work with, they will shop around for you, and are paid by the insurance companies, so it's free or low cost for you! You could ask your local friends who they have for insurance, and visit the websites for info on individual policies, too.

At 6 months out, it's too late to enroll in COBRA, but good luck in your search!
