Re: Exchanging Christmas gifts with family members

  • SS here.  We used to do a secret santa, but that turned into an exchange of gift cards for multiple reasons.  Yes, we did a "top 3 list" with a spending limit, but my family is not really full of shoppers, so most people just got gift cards.  I personally didn't like the top 3 list either.  I like picking out presents for people.  I like the challenge of finding something that they'll like.

Since the secret santa thing wasn't working out, we ended up just starting to do a "nicer" white elephant.  Our white elephants before were so varied in type/extravagance of gift, that it really wasn't fair.  Now, your ticket into white elephant is supposed to be a wrapped gift valued between $20 and $25.

The kids still get presents.  The adults just play White Elephant.

  • I said SS. I usually give my parents a wishlist but my sister usually just picks something out (and I just pick something for her). DH always likes me to give him a wishlist but he never gives me one so I just try to find something he'd like. It ends up being half family members work off gift list and half don't and same thing for my shopping. Just depends on the person and the year...

  • I give a wishlist to my parents and ILs.  I usually ask my mom and dad what they want and then MH just wings it for his parents and his brother.  I wind up just coming up with something for SIL and for my grandparents and my nieces and nephews.

  • Our family doesn't spend a lot on presents (so no need for a "wish list" so to speak). We usually just give each other one gift worth around $25. We always ask for input though.

  • Several people in my family have wish lists on Amazon (my parents, DS, DH and I and our siblings and siblings-in-law). We use those but also just think of something the person might like. We do exchange gifts with my grandparents which is impossible because they need/want nothing at their age. We don't set spending limits.

  • SS- we pick names among the siblings and significant others, and my parents distribute lists accordingly. We've always done lists, but since our family grew by a couple members, we decided to pick names instead of everyone getting everyone gifts a few years ago.

DH's family is much smaller (just one sister who isn't married or has kids, and his parents), so we get everyone gifts on that side. SIL usually doesn't go off lists-but I decided to send her one anyway this year. We usually end up with a lot of things we don't want/need/have room for-and she never give gift reciepts.
