Babies: 9 - 12 Months

sleep regression...

So I have been a lurker for a long time and now I have a question that I need alot of help with.  I just don't know what do it any more.  I just want to cry all the time. So for the past week or so she has been waking up at about 1am to stay awake and play for 2-3 hours.  She still wakes up at the same time in the am around 7-8.   To top things off she is barely taking naps.  She throws her paci out and then screams hysterical.  I have to go in the room to give it back to her and then when she sees me she has a fit.   Everything has been the same here except that she is on WCM now for about 1-2 weeks.   Could it be the milk?  Should I cut down to 1 nap a day and then put her to bed earlier for the night?  TIA

Re: sleep regression...

  • I don't have the magic answer for you, but I can sympathize with your situation. DD was a dream napper. I would put her down with little to no effort at her normal times and she would sleep for two hours each nap and STTN 95% of the time since ~4 months old.

Just this past week, she has fought her naps like crazy. To the point of not letting me set her down in her crib. She would fall asleep on me and cry like a banshee if I set her down. Well, we did CIO when I first sleep trained her and it worked for us really well. I realized that I was letting her dictate her sleep and it was affecting it (obviously) poorly. I went back to my normal routine of setting her in her crib after a quick 30 second sway to her FP seahorse music, set her down and left the room. She cried for 45 minutes. I didn't go in to soothe (which I did when I first sleep trained her- at 3,5,8 and 10 minute intervals). She eventually fell asleep. That was two nights ago, and ever since that one night that I didn't give in and went back to the normal routine, she went back to falling asleep on her own. I'm not sure what clicked for her, but something did.

I'm not sure how you feel about CIO, and I'm not suggesting you do that. I would just try to go back to how you sleep trained your LO in the first place, and stick to it. If it makes you feel better, I raised the same questions that you are now. I thought maybe she was ready for one nap, but she was still showing all signs of being tired at her normal times. I thought maybe the switch to WCM was giving her an upset tummy (we started 1/2 WCM and 1/2 formula bottles about 4 days ago), but she has been regular and showing no signs of pain or anything when she's awake and playing.

As far as overnight, I would let her play in there. She is just figuring things out right now. She's fine in her crib, she's safe and not upset. There's no reason to go in and try to put her back down. She will just think it's time to get up.

I hope some of what I've said/suggested helps you. Hang in there!!!

  • Thanks ladies.  We did CIO when we sleep trained.  However our new problem is that we share a room with her.  She is in her crib on the other side of the room but she can still see us and I know that is a huge problem.  We put her to bed way before us and she is fine but it's like she knows when we come to bed and then she wakes up and has a fit.  And I don't think it's a tummy ache from the WCM cause she is fine all day when she is awake and she eats fine and she has regular bowel movements.

  • Wow Lageorgiapaperie I had no idea that you were in Illinois let alone in the suburbs.  I see you are in Roselle and I am in Addison.  We should plan a play date or something.  I would love to talk more about more local things and activities for the babies.  TIA

Why is your DD in the same room with you? (Just curious) if possible, I would get her out of your room. Obviously, you know that it isn't working for you. When we went to visit family, we had to share our room with her and it was also a nightmare. Every movement we made in bed to switch positions, she woke up. :-( is there anyway you can have her in a PnP in the living room or something temporary? Not knowing the situation there, it is hard to try to come to a solution. :-/

  • Well actually we are living in a small apartment temporarily.  So this is out only option.  And we thought about other options but she goes to bed before us so the bedroom is best for her.  And then we come in a little later.

  • On another note though we have just been leaving her in the crib to CIO when she does wake up and it has gotten much better.  Thank you ladies for the advice.
