Parenting after a Loss

So much junk!

I have a feeling I am going to have to regularly purge DD's closet and her growing toy collection (she doesn't even play with toys yet!) Kids really don't need much, but the relations just can't seem to help themselves buying kitschy things at the dollar store :/ I am a terrible person, but I honestly want to take everything my mom just sent her for Halloween and donate it to the Goodwill.

How do you handle all the "stuff?"

  • My family is actually pretty good about that.. I got a ton of stuff from my Sister (she has 2 boys), so that was very helpful.. but, even with all the hand-me-downs lots of people have gotten DS more clothes.. I have a dozen bins in my basement filled with clothes varying in size!! I look at it now, and what I've  purchased seems like a huge waste, simply because DS grew SO fast, so every time I bought new close in the next size, he'd only get to wear it once or twice before he outgrew it.. I like to think the next baby might not grow that fast (assuming we have another, and that it's a boy!).

My in-laws are really good at buying "practical" stuff instead of clothes/toys.. MIL often buys diapers or formula for us, which has been a huge help.  Definitely appreciated!!

  • My mom loves to shop at the dollar store, so I feel your pain. And she doesn't just shop for DD, but for DH and I, too. I feel bad because she does it out of love, but everything she buys is either junky or nick-nacky and really doesn't have a purpose. The stuff usually just hangs around the house in a box until I get around to having yard sale or making a trip to goodwill.

This is so my mother. I actually told her to stop buying DH and I stuff because I know she doesn't have a lot of money, and I felt terrible. I know I can't ask her to do the same for DD... so I just put the collection of pumpkin rubber ducks for ages 3+ she bought in with our Halloween decorations Tongue Tied

  • Most of it can't be re-gifted so most of it goes to the donation box it after taking a pic of it.   I'm really trying to encourage them to wait until he's old enough to play with stuff but like you said they can't seem to help themselves.
