C-sections

length of stay

Hi, ladies,

For DD, I had my surgery on a Tuesday morning and was released Saturday morning, which was the max stay allowed by my insurance (which was 4 days).

So this time, if I have 3 days, and my surgery is a Friday morning, I should have until Monday morning, right? Because some people are telling me I will only have until Sunday morning.

Re: length of stay

  • It depends on how your insurance company counts the "days."  My insurance company's days went from midnight to 11:59 p.m.  (It allows 4 days for c-sections.)  The hospital stay begins from the time the baby is born.  Therefore, if a baby was born at 11:30 p.m. on a Monday, it counts as Day 1 of the hospital stay, so the person would be discharged on Thursday.   A person who delivered at 12:05 a.m. on Monday would also be discharged on Thursday.   If your insurance company counts "days" this way, you would be discharged on Sunday.

Our previous insurance company had a 3 night policy for c-sections.  I don't remember what time that company's "night" began.  Under this type of a policy, you would be discharged on Monday.

  • Thanks, that explains the discrepancy. I guess my last insurance counted nights spent. I'll have to call to see how this company does things. It' still BCBS, but a different local franchise.

  • It depends on your insurance company and your dr/hospital.  I delivered DS on Friday at nearly 1pm and was discharged on Monday morning.  My RCS is scheduled for 1:30 PM on a Tuesday and I'm assuming that I will be discharged on Friday morning.  But I do have the option of leaving a day early and having a nurse visit me the next day.

  • My insurance used to have a 4-midnight stay. Meaning you get released on DAY 5. This time though, it changed to a 3-midnight stay, meaning I got released on DAY 4.

I had my baby on Tuesday night and was out on Friday.........

  • Thanks, ladies. I just called both my insurance and the hospital for a definitive answer.

My insurance allows a 4-day stay, and I am released on the fifth day (so they count the day of surgery but don't count the day of release).

The hospital allows a 3- to 4-day stay, but they DON'T count the day of surgery and DO count the day of release.

Either way, that means I have surgery on Friday and am out Tuesday morning.

The hospital did say they would allow me to leave Monday if I felt OK, but not before then.

  • Our insurance blows and I could stay 4 days, but I'd have to pay for it.  With my second I had a RCS on Friday morning and was discharged Sunday morning, per my request.  I had to let my OB know ahead of time that I wanted to leave early and they didn't use staples, like the first time, because they would need to be in longer than two days.  So they used something else instead.
  • With Ds3 I had surgery at 8am friday morning and they released me on monday morning. I could have left sunday if I wanted too but I wanted an extra 24 hours to recover before going home to my crazy life of having 3 kids 3 years old and under.

  • While my insurance allows 4 days, for some reason they were anxious to push me out the door so to say...

I had a RCS on a Tuesday, DS was born at 3:33pm...Thursday morning at 5am the OB on call says I am being released...by mid morning Thursday all my paperwork was done and they were ready for me to go. I was shocked to say the least but honestly as little as DS was sleeping and the frequent vital checks home sounded better, at least I could sleep there.

  • My first day never started until the day after my cesarean. So even though DS was born at 2:55am Saturday, my first day there was Sunday.

  • I think we stayed our maximum days but I am not sure. We went in early on a Monday morning (12:15 ish) and were released on Thursday evening. Good luck!
