Pregnant after 35

Strep Throat and Taking Antibiotics.......

I am almost 6 weeks pregnant and learned today that I have Strep throat group C.  I went to my PCP on Monday for a throat culture and the office just called me today with the results.  I am supposed to call my PCP in the morning to let her know how I am feeling- she will then consult with my OB to see what the next steps should be, i.e., what are the safest antibiotics.

I am so scared that being sick and taking antibiotics will effect my pregnancy.  Has anyone else had Strep while preggo or taken antibiotics during the first trimester?

I am drinking lots of fluids and hot decat tea w/ lemon & honey (pasteurized of course :))  Is there anything else I can do naturally to make me feel better?

Thank you,

Re: Strep Throat and Taking Antibiotics.......

  • I actually just got over both strep and bronchitis, two weeks ago!  Wonderful for my pregnant immune system.  My doctor gave me a prescription for Amoxicillian.  Both he (my family doctor), the pharmicist and my OB confirmed it was okay to take.  As nervous as I was, I had too as I was getting sicker and sicker.  I also drank lots and lots of water and OJ, slept with a humidifier and rested a ton!  I kicked it in about 5 days.  All was good at my appointment last week.

  • I am happy to hear you kicked the butt out of both strep and bronchitis!  It is so reassuring to know that you took antibiotics too and everything is okay.

I am allergic to penicillin so I know I need to likely stay away from the "cillin" pills.  I am going to go get another tall glass of water now :)

  • You could also gargle with salt water, that will bring some relief and help clear the infection.  Hope you feel better soon!
  • Thanks :) actually, I gargled a couple of hours ago.  I forgot to mention that I had done that as part of my "natural remedies."   Now that you've reminded me, I am going to go gargle again!

  • YES!  I had strep when I was around 12 weeks.  I took antibiotics w/o a problem.  There is a specific kind that my doctor gave me that's safe to use during pregnancy....can't remember now what it was.  I also gargled with salt water, ate spicy Thai curry soup and sucked on natural throat drops.  Nothing really made me fell better until the antibiotics kicked in though.  BTW-this happened the day we were packing for a cross country move.  I got on a plane to move from GA to WA the next morning.  My 4 year old son had it too at the same time.  Good times.

I am so sorry...strep really sucks.  Feel better soon!

  • I didn't have strep, but I had a sinus infection and was given antibiotics for 10 days.  I told the ER doc that I was pg and in my first trimester and the meds they gave me were safe.  I also double checked with my OB and the pharmacist and when all said they were safe I felt better about taking them, plus it got rid of the infection and made me feel so much better.

  • There are lots of meds that are perfectly safe during pregnancy. Strep can be dangerous and I would bet the risk to your pregnancy is higher by NOT taking anything than be taking the antibiotics.

  • Strep can be extrememly dangerous without treatment.  It can turn into scarlet fever, then if you get strep that progresses again, it can turn into rheumatic fever and attack your heart.  Don't delay getting a script for antibiotics ASAP.  It is far more dangerous to have an active infection like strep than take a round of antibiotics.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

  • Thank you ladies for your reassurance. My hubby picked up Azithromycin from the pharmacy on the way home. I am happy that my PCP and OB took care of this and I plan to start the pills after dinner. I just can't wait to start feeling like me again :)
