XP: 4 year old behavior problems?

One of my mommy friends asked me to post this on her behalf. I don't have children yet, but will in a matter of weeks (see ticker).

My friend has been having some behavioral issues with her 4 yr. old. She is looking for any suggestions or even to be told that her DS is a typical 4 yr. old.

Here are some situations that come up frequently:

1. Refuses to participate in group activities at school. Story time, circle time, or anything that doesn't involve play time. He's been in school since age 2.5.

2. Will not participate during any special classes (swim lessons, gym classes, etc). He will either play in the corner by himself or scream and cry when (nicely) coaxed by the teacher to participate.

When asked why he doesn't want to participate in a specific situation, he usually answers that he just wants to play.

Any insight/advice? Thank you! :)

  • Does he play with other kids? Do his teachers think it is an issue? Has she talked to her pedi?

He does play with other kids, but does seem to prefer to play by himself. Most of the teachers so far have just labeled him as "strong-willed." So far she hasn't mentioned it to the pedi.

  • DS is a shy kid, he will participate somewhat.  If the kids are in a circle, he'll go.  If they are singing a song, he won't sing with them.  He prefers to be by himself or with a small group of friends.  With 1-2 kids, he'll interact, but is still very quiet.  He is just like DH, who isn't very social at all.  Could it be just this kid's personality?

DS is in skating lessons and doing well, except last week when he said he didn't want to go.  He got out on the ice and hardly moved.  Not that he can't, he just didn't want to.  The teacher would tell him to do something, and he would just stand there.  It was frustrating.  Him not participating last week was just making a point he didn't want to be there.  He was also feeling a bit under the weather.  Can she find some activities that he would like to be in that maybe are not in such  a big group and are more individualized?

DS is very shy was like this last year.  He was also labeled as "strong-willed" and "extremely independent".  The teachers just let him be because they saw that he was happy even if he wasn't the most interactive.  He didn't talk to a single person or play with anyone until March.  His teachers last year never thought it was an issue and told us just to give it time.

He still is quiet, but is doing much better this year.  He has a small group of boys that he plays with regularly and we do playdates with.  He talks to the teachers and other kids a little bit and even gets up in front of the class to do show and tell.
