  • did you have something to eat before you had it done? even a light breakfast helps, you cant eat anything with high sugar and or high carbs so something like an egg or two about two hourse before you go would help alot too. Take a water bottle with you, a big one. drink whole BUNCHES. Im sorry this one didnt go so well, at least they dont have to draw the massive ammount they usually do at the beginning of pregnancy. just two vials and you're good!

much hugs from AZ :/ and good luck on monday

  • I think it depends on your doctor, because they drew FIVE vials during mine! The drink also made me not feel well and I had a horrible sugar crash after. It was like I ate a 5lb bag of candy or something. Then I was just tired for the rest of the day. I'm just glad it's over.

  • I just did my 3 hr test this week with fasting from midnight the night before (no food or water until the end of the test). I felt the same as you, warm, sweaty, dizzy, about 30 min into the test. I asked for somewhere to lay down and INSTANTLY felt better. I failed the 1 hour test, and I'm not sure I would have if I hadn't eating something before the test because I was hungry (also a morning test).

GL on Monday. Ask if you can lay down after drinking your drink. I took a book with me and read while laying down. Made the time pass so quickly and gave me something else to focus on.

  • That sucks. My test was fine, the drink tasted like tang and I was so worried I'd get dizzy or sick after hearing so many horror stories on these boards. I must have been one of the luckys. Hope the next round goes smoother for you!

  • Ugh- I am SO sorry! I had the same experience with my last pregnancy. Luckily- I didnt get sick until AFTER they had drawn the blood so I was good to go. It was such a horrible experience though! I hope it goes better the next time.

When I did it this time around I still felt a little sick, but it did go better! Good luck!

Be sure you ask whether you can drink the water, and how much you can drink.  It can skew the results (as can walking aruond which I've seen others mention).

Sorry you had such a bad experience. Make sure you have a bedtime snack with at least 30 carbs the night before so you don't start off low and spike your sugars too quickly

All of this. I was told zero water or anything else, and absolutely no walking. Not even to go pee (so I was super-glad I went before they called me back!). I think the whole test is kind of weird that way--come in, let's stuff you with way more glucose than you would ever consume that quickly, make you sit there and do nothing even though you normally would, and have no water even though in regular life you'd be drinking it all day. Then we'll decide if you're body is processing sugar properly...I know they have their reasons for doing it this way, but it just seems a little messed up to me!

DITTO THIS.  Which is precisely why I refused the test and instead had them give me a glucose monitor.  I'm about halfway through my week of testing fasting + 1 hour after meals.  I can already tell you that I do not have GD.  My sugars are perfect.  Even after meals with more carbs than I usually eat.  I think that stressing the system and then testing it is just insane.  I won't lie, it's annoying to remember to cart the monitor around with me, but I MUCH prefer it to having to ingest that much sugar since I really don't eat it anymore.

  • I got really dizzy and hot when I did it with DS #1. I ended up moving to a chair that was against a wall so I could alternate between closing my eyes and trying to rest and putting my head between my legs.

It's A LOT of sugar to take in in a short period of time.  Sorry you got sick and you have to do it again.  Are you able to eat anything before hand?  My doctor didn't restrict me either time (with DS1 and now), so I felt a little better having something in my stomach.

That's awesome you're able to do that instead! Good for you! I've never had a problem with the GD test bc I like sweets and I guess my body is used to it :)

Op- good luck on Monday! Fingers crossed you are able to keep it down and you pass with flying colors!

  • I had 32 oz of water before I started on the glucose, and took the whole 5 minutes to drink it. I also ate a sub about an hour before, so I was worried about puking. It seems like every doctor has different rules, but I was allowed to drink water during the hour. I was full so I didn't need any. I'm convinced that having a full stomach helped me. Good luck on Monday!
  • I had my test last week and had a similar reaction 30 minutes in but I was able to get over it without getting sick.  I surprisingly didn't mind the taste of the orange drink.  I had 2 eggs for breakfast and my appointment was at 11:30am.  I brought with me a bottle of water that was slightly frozen but didn't drink any when I felt bad because I was under the impression that I couldn't.  Instead I held it to my head and neck to cool off.  It lasted about 10 minutes and then I was fine.  I'm still waiting for the results, I may need to call my doctor.  I had the test done at a lab.

     Good luck on Monday!

  • I had mine yesterday. They don't restrict eating beforehand or drinking water ever, so I just had eggs for breakfast (and a handful of pumpkin seeds) and drank water normally.

Of course, I didn't think about the fact that I have tiny veins, and fasting makes it 1000 times worse. Plus, she was rushed to get the blood drawn at the 1 hr mark, so the first attempt failed. She tied the tourniquet way to tight and I wasn't bleeding enough.

She got both vials out of my other arm, but now I've got nasty bruises on the inside of both elbows :(

Bright side: my office doesn't use the glucola drinks. I just had to down two apple juice boxes.

  • I have worried myself sick over the test.  I am doing mine next Tuesday.  With DS#1 I was with a different OB/provider and it was just the one hour test - which I did fine with.

This time around my OB requires 12 hours fasting, and the two hour test.  With blood draws before drinking the icky syrup, at one hour and at two hours.... I am so nervous about getting sick =(

If you're really concerned about the test, I would ask for an alternative!  My midwife prescribed me a glucose monitor and asked me to check my blood sugar 4x/day for 7 days.  It's a totally different type of commitment, but it maybe takes 5-6 mins/day so I figure I still come out ahead. ;)  I can already tell you that I do not have GD.  Every reading has been PERFECT.  I have no doubt that the rest of them will be also! :)

I did it mostly because I think the way they test it is insane AND because I gave up sugar back in January on my Whole30 and really have not added a lot back in.  I just can't justify dumping that much sugar into my system after all of the research I've read that shows how awful sugar is for our bodies!  Don't get me wrong, I still love and miss sweets.  But now when I indulge it's either something I've baked with honey or it's a very small portion.  HTH!

  • I'm so sorry but totally jealous you were allowed water between drinking that nasty stuff and your blood draw. I wasn't allowed to eat or drink after the drink and before my draw.

My office took 3 vials because my doctor also checked enzymes, something to do with my RH level, and checked my iron and probably other things.

I hope you pass and don't have to endure the 3 hour test! I was very lucky and passed mine.

  • I knew I would throw up with the nasty drink and told my Dr that.  She offed me jelly beans instead.  Still the WAY TOO MUCH sugar feeling but much less upsetting to the stomach since they were solid, not liquid.

Smart...I think if there's another time around for me, I will just skip the tests altogether and do the same thing - just monitor and eat the GD diet anyway.  Truly, the hour after my 3-hour GTT was the absolute WORST I have ever felt this entire pregnancy...!
